Velocity and load question
I have the new Lyman 40th Edition Loading Manual. It has loads for the 40 S&W using Power Pistol as follows:
175gr. Lead 1.125 OAL out of a 4" barrel
min 5.9gr. @ 908 fps max 6.6gr. @ 998 fps
My question and concern is that I am loading 180gr. HSM Lead out of a 3.8 inch barrel and getting the following:
6.0gr. Power Pistol and getting an Avg of 1032 fps
6.3gr. Power Pistol and getting an Avg of 1067 fps
As you can see, I am getting much higher velocities than the book says. I dont have and dont seem to be able to locate a decent calculator for pistol pressures, so I dont know if I am getting toward the max pressure or not. Is the increase in velocity between what the book says and what I am seeing a concern?????
I recently had a KB with my 40 M&P Shield because I was using a different powder than I thought I was using. Went to a local sporting goods store and asked for a pound of Clays Universal and they gave me a pound of Clays. I knew there was Clays International and Clays Universal, I didnt know there were three flavors of Clays. I loaded some 155XTP's with 6.1gr. of Clays and my Shield didnt like that at all. I know the difference now and that wont happen again for sure. I have loaded rifle for a long time but just recently started loading pistol. I have come to realize that it takes more research and attention to reloading pistol. Differences between min and max are so tight.
