Guys,
What is the drop in diameter gauge/checker called? I've seen them before where they are the exact diameter of the bbl of whatever caliber you're handloading, and if the finished round drops all the way into the hole, it's not still belled out too much? I would use it instead of taking my bbl out and doing a drop in test.
It's killing me and I want to order a few calibers.
Anyone have a clue? Or, did I pick the wrong week to quit sniffing glue???

Nope, not that. This thing is simply a cylinder of metal that has a .476 (for .45ACP), hole bored into the metal. You simply drop your finished round into the hole, if it fits, you know it's not belled out. In the past, I've taken out my barrel of one of my .45's and clamped it down. About every 10 reloaded rounds I just do a drop in test to make sure it will feed properly. I use calipers for OAL every 10 to 15.Quote:

Case Gauge is what you're thinking of. The "Cartridge checker" looks like it may serve the same purpose - but I don't know what tolerances it's cut for.

Doh.. Austin beat me to it. I need to refresh my tabs more often.
One problem with case gauges; they will tell you if a round is sized properly and whether exceeds SAAMI OAL, but it will NOT tell you if the OAL is short enough to function in the pistol you are shooting. The only what to know if the OAL is too long for the chamber of your pistol is to use the good old "plunk" test. However, once you have your OAL established, they are convenient for quick spot checks of your rounds.
