OK I want to get started reloading pretty soon, and I have some questions.
1 is this set up good for a beginner? And what else would I need with it to reload 40 cal?

Personally I would look at Lee's Cast Turret press. It is simpler to use esp. as a newbie, can be run in single stage, or indexed progressive. Kempf's has a good deal on a kit, and I suggest the upgrade to make life easier.
just my 2 cents.
If your new don't go with a progressive loader, go with a single stage, that way you learn all the steps and then move up to a progressive,RCBS has a set up called the rockcrusher and it come with almost every thing you need to start reloading, and best of all , you can buy a upgrade and convert it to a progressive:bier:
I'd also suggest a single stage to start out with. If you just can't bare to do that, the Lee Classic Cast Turret is a great press also. Its a little more complicated, but it can be used as a single stage if you deactivate the auto index.
At any rate, the Lee progressives (Pro 1000 and Loadmaster) get pretty mixed reviews and have a fair number of reported problems as compared to other manufactures' progressives. I'd skip them.
Guys, it's not rocket science. You learn the exact same things on a progressive as you do a single stage. The only reason to not get a progressive from the get go is $. They cost a little more is all.
Ok I think I have an idea of what I need to get started. Can someone please make like a check list so I know I have everything?
The Lee kit comes with a scale
I thought it did. What do I need a dial caliper for??
Lee 4 hole turret kit for $99.99 at Midway. Out now but will be in 3/30/09. All you need to add to get started is the 4 die set and calipers. I have had mine for about 4 months add to it and very happy with it.
And a tumbler kit
To know how long the finish bullet is
Also the Lee case trimmer, burr removal, and primer pocket cleaning tools. Personally, I went with a Lee handloader set-up. With the volume I do (a couple hundred a month) it worked out well for me and saved some bucks.
That all comes with the kit.
You need to use the dial caliper to measure case length too. Semiautos headspace on the front lip of the brass.
