Small Pistol Primer VS Small Pistol Magnum Primers

I was told that I could use magnum primers without issue even though I'm not shooting a magnum round. I'm gathering the pieces to start reloading 9mm for a Glock 19.

I have a press, and powder was having problems getting primers. On gun-broker I found someone selling magnum primers and he is who told me the above. I did find / order some regular primers although they were expensive ($175 for 5000).

certain powders in certain calibers and certain grain weight of charge (usually in rifle bullets) require magnum primers to insure complete burn.

using magnum primers when regular are called for will CHANGE the load and IS NOT recommended.

During the primer shortage, I have experimented with this issue. Here is what I found. Magnum primers can be used in regular loads without ill effects as long as the loads are not near max.

I use them interchangeably with standard primers when loading practice ammo. I load for middle of the range velocities.

I have been doing this occasionally for the last 30+ years. For the most part, magnum primers simply have a longer burning/hotter flame to improve ignition on slow burning and/or hard to ignite powders.
