I'm currently paying on an Bushmater AR-15 and in the meantime I want to get stocked up on reloading supplies for the 223. What would be the best overall bullet grain to use as plinking, varmits and of course self defense in the event the SHTF?

55fmj is the cheepest to buy and load... fmj is not a good choice for for much more then punching paper...
will it kill? sure, a 22lr will kill, but you have to have vary good at shot placement
or plan on lots of extra rounds on target
I used the Sierra 55 grn spitzers on rockchucks (like groundhogs) and coyotes. The chucks exploded, the dogs dropped like a rock. Never saw a need to try anything else.
