It passed the subcommittee yesterday with only a few changes. Mainly private schools got the same rights as public schools.

A lot of amendments were tried to get added back to the bill, but failed. These included restricting the airport again and adding the 1000ft buffer zone restriction, etc.

However, it passed by a single person margin (5-4). This goes to show that we should not let our guard down and should stay in contact with our representatives about this letting them know how we feel.

This bill goes to full committee now, and if passed then on to House Rules and then on to the House for a vote. As long as there are no major changes, we may get this bill to the Governor this year. Any big changes and it may get held up heading back to the Senate. Stay on your representatives and let them know you want this passed without any major changes.

umm yeah I have a beautiful 5 inch double edged personal defense SOG knife I cant wait to tether to my belt sideways in the back. I would hate to get disarmed now by a thug overpowering me and not have a backup stabber.

SB308 is now going to a hearing by the full House Judiciary - Non Civil Committee on Thursday (4-22-10) at 9:30am at the Capitol Building in Atlanta (206 Washington Street). It should be in either room 132CAP or 341CAP, so if you plan to attend check when entering so you don't go to the wrong room.

The GA House Judiciary - Non Civil Committee page can be found at Judiciary Non-Civil and has contacts for all committee members.

No, I would have to make the trip up from Savannah and miss some more work, only to hope they don't change it like they did with the sub committee meeting.

BTW, I posted the hearing info above this morning before heading out the door and have missed a lot of what's been going on as I was serving on a Jury the last 3 days. I've been called for jury duty many times over the years, but this one is the first one I've ever been picked. The case ended earlier this evening with guilty verdicts on all counts because of overwhelming evidence. The judge gave the defendant in this case 2 consecutive lifes with a third concurrent life and 2 concurrent 20yr. sentences and he got off easy in my opinion. You can read the charges of the case here, and then let me tell you it's "worse" than what those charges make it out to sound.

I learned a lot about the way trials are handled, structured and presented by attorneys. I also learned that it's very hard to get usable finger prints, especially on most guns. The magazine is the best location to find any and then it's still not a sure thing. I also learned that many criminals, knowing they're in the wrong and did evil, still waive their right to have an attorney present for questioning. I learned that in GA, you do not get to hear the criminal background of a defendant until the sentencing phase, if convicted. And I learned that after sentencing, Judges have opinions and will voice them while still on the bench (even if it's in the lack of faith in our parole boards and their personal).

I agree with the criminal background not being mentioned before the case is determined G or NG.

What if there is that one in a gazillion chance that the defendant is actually innocent even though he may be a convicted, served, and released person.

    You never know.

Except in this case the date that he was incarcerated overlapped with a statement of where he was on a certain date during interrogation. It just seemed to me after the verdict and before sentencing when hearing he was released just 5 days before committing this crime that it conflicted with earlier video interrogation evidence where he had stated he was somewhere within that time that he obviously couldn't have been.

SB308 passed out of full committee and heads to House Rules to be scheduled for full House Floor Vote. We lost church and campus carry completely in committee. No "at the churches discretion", it's now against the law again to carry in any church. Same with campus automatically being against the law (no school discretion).

It got out of committee with a 9-5 vote. There is not much time left in this calendar year for this bill be passed and given to the Governor to sign. If it goes to the floor and the House passes it, it has to go back to conference committee to work out the differences between Senate and House and then be voted on by both before going on to the Governor.

On the first page according to the law a .50 action express is not defined as a handgun. Reading it now....

After a couple idiotic questions by representative Benfield, SB291 (airport carry) just passed the House.

Still waiting to see if SB308 comes up.

Well, they adjourned until Thursday without bringing SB308 to vote.

Edit:You can see how your rep voted on SB 291 at http://www.legis.ga.gov/legis/2009_10/votes/hv0957.htm. SB 308 still needs your support so contact your reps while there's still time.

SB 308 is on the calendar for today (Georgia General Assembly - General Calendar - Legislative Day 40 - 04/29/2010), the last day of the 2009-2010 legislative session. There's still time to email and call your representatives urging them to support and help pass this bill.

As of right now (6:30pm EST), the bill has passed the House (118-48), went back to the Senate where they insisted on their version, came back to the House where they insisted on theirs and now goes to a 6 member conference committee (3 Senators, 3 Representatives)to work out the differences and be brought back to the House and Senate floor to be voted on the Conference Committee's version.
