Council supports legislation against illegal guns

The Common Council voted to approve two resolutions supporting pending federal gun control legislation Wednesday.

The laws, known as the Terror Gap and Gun Show Loophole, have been championed by gun control advocates as a way of keeping illegal guns off the streets and out of the hands of criminals.

Mayoral aide Angelo Roefaro, who also works as the upstate coordinator for advocacy group Mayors Against Illegal Guns, said he introduced the legislation first in Utica and will send it around the state next week so that other interested municipalities can decide if they support it.

He said the resolutions have the effect of bolstering the support of Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, both of whom are co-sponsors on both proposed laws.

“It's important they pass these things,” Roefaro said. “The representatives look for how cities represent the issues.”

The votes were not unanimous, as Common Councilman Frank Vescera, D-1, said the council should have waited a week so that Dan Sullivan, the Oneida County Assistant Pistol Licensing Officer, could have a chance to come in and discuss the merits of the laws.

Vescera said Sullivan raised concerns about them in a conversation.

“Debate was not allowed on this process,” he said.

What kind of crap is this anyhow. There have always been laws against the illegal purchase and or sale of firearms. Why not just enforce those laws instead of cluttering up the process with so-called "new" ones.

It's because they can't or won't enforce the laws so they have to make up some more BS to show they are "doing" something. This is a vey common tactic of government to justify their positions in office.

New York, the cancer of the east. If we could just cut NY, MA, CA, and cook county, IL out of the union it would be a much better place to live.

Well, all you have to tell your mayor is that Bloomingberg did a no-no buy having someone else buy a handgun in a different state for Bloomingberg. Which is a felony. BATFE will probably get in touch with Bloomingberg and maybe serve him papers and share a cell in prision with Madoff and be buddies. richgp100z

Some one from run-down town Utica sucking up to those hypocrites Gillibrand and Schumer for $$$? Surely you aren't surprised? Utica is as corrupt as Chicago, always has been. The difference is Utica is far smaller and much more distressed than Chi-town.

Oneida County is permissive to issue. So is Madison from what I recall. NOT surprised that Sullivan has reservations with gun grabbing tactics from downstate.

AZChevy, believe it or not, many counties in rural NYS are supportive to very supportive of gun rights. Same is true for MA. Unfortunately, in the seat of government of both states, gun control is the mothers' milk for the majority of politicians. Doesn't mean that all of the people are of the same ilk though. Lived in both states, glad to be finally in the south.
