Right now the incentive is for them to follow orders and keep their job. This needs to be changed.

Guess who is still mayor and police chief? That's right, the same ones during Katrina! And they just got a new arsenal for when it happens again!

STAFF PHOTO BY ELIOT KAMENITZ. Mayor C. Ray Nagin and NOPD Superintendent Warren J. Riley displayed new equipment that has been obtained for the police department. Example items displayed at the Louisiana Superdome included a Mobile Command Post, Lynco Bear and Bear Cat armored cars, M-4 rifles, two SkyWatch Towers, passenger buses, prisoner transport vans and new riot gear. Tuesday, February 12, 2008. Riley and Nagin try out the new M-4 rifles.

Actually, neither is still the same. The current mayor of New Orleans is Mitch Landrieu. The current Superintendent of Police is Ronal W. Serpas.

Personally, while I agree that a state law on the books may not actually stop gun confiscation, I still think they are a good idea. At least they indicate that the state legislature is listening to the citizenry. And the vast majority of state and local LEO's will follow the law. It also provides a vehicle to prosecute those who don't. While I am normally a fan of less laws, not more laws (especially any relating to firearms), in this particular case, I think these laws are a good idea. I think it is essential that free citizens be armed and ready during times of emergency. It certainly worked well in Mississippi after Katrina.

    I stand corrected.

Georgia, sadly. Our governor vetoed the Katrina bill last week. It's the second time he's vetoed it during his tenure.

Next year, after he's gone, well get it passed.

And, believe it or not, I read that Senator (at the time) Obama signed a document in support of the people keeping guns in a time of emergency.
