What are we turning into? Sheesh...

SALT LAKE CITY -- Going to a Jazz game or concert at Energy Solutions Arena is a little bit like going to the airport now with all the new security measures are in place. The step up in security isn't due to any particular event or threat, but officials felt it was the right time to add a new layer, one that could delay you next time you visit.

The line outside Energy Solutions Arena always gets longer just before tip-off, but tonight, it was likely a little longer than usual as fans encountered the new security for the first time.

Jazz fan Koy Jasperson said, "I noticed the security, obviously, and the line."

Easton Folster said, "It didn't take too long, so it's all good."

Similar to the line at the airport., the new rules require you to take everything out of your pockets and walk through a metal detector, in addition to bag searches. Officials say they were doing similar screenings for certain games as required by the NBA and did it for the 2002 Olympics.

Randy Rigby, President of the Larry H. Miller Entertainment Group, said, "We felt it was the right move at the right time as we're making this remodel to step up this security."

Officials say the remodel improved handicap accessibility to the venue.

There hasn't been a lot of publicity about the changes, but officials are now urging people to leave extra time to get into the game.

"Our guests are learning, ‘I'll be a little more wise in what I'm hauling in my pocket or purse,' so it streamlines the process and they come right through," Rigby said.

And people who learned about the measures as they walked through Wednesday night seemed OK with it.

"It helps you feel comfortable when you come to a game. Lets you know you're here for the game and nothing else," Jasperson said.

Fan Grace Allred said, "I think it's a great addition to keep everybody safe."

What's not allowed in the building is similar to the restrictions at the airport: No weapons, like guns, knives, or things like that.
