More ridiculous knee jerk legislation
Don't have a gun within 1000' of a government official!
Right, this law would of prevented Loughner from shooting the congresswoman and others.

Why don't they just make it illegal to murder someone.
Exodus 22:2 "If a thief is caught breaking in and is struck so that he dies, the defender is not guilty of bloodshed"

So I suppose the murder statute is not doing the job.

Hmmm... ok,.... so everyone who is a Government Official needs to carry a (might as well say white) flag on an 8 foot pole and wave it in the air, so that anyone carrying a concealed weapon runs far away so they are not within 1000 feet of G.O.
I think the wheel fell off the cart.
Edit: Now that I read the link, I'm not surprised to see it's someone in NY pushing it. What an idiot.
The average citizen has no way of keeping track of every Government Official at all times and knowing exactly where they are so as to avoid being within 1000' of them. This ridiculous that he would even think that is logical.

The problem with this country is that most "officials" think that they are a higher class of human being than everyone else.
When one of them gets whacked it temporarily forces them to understand for a fleeting moment that they can bleed and die just the same as anyone else. That realization is what truly horrifies some of them...so they take it upon them selves to try to get some feel good legislation passed so that they can sleep better at night.
What they don't realize it that no written law will prevent a man from becoming lawless if is he so compelled.
In the mean time, the rest of us become burdened and in some cases harassed by stupid laws.
I would rather stand against the cannons of the wicked than against the prayers of the righteous.

I suspect the term "government official" can easily be expanded to include ANY gov employee like, say, Ted who's an IT guy working at the state capitol building or Agnes who files applications at the SSN office.

I'd turn it around, and make it a crime for a government official to come within 1000 feet of someone carrying a gun! After all, they're a government official - they should know better!
