Thumbs up Fast and Furious Update

Monday's testimony in the "Fast and Furious" hjearings in Congress; from the Wall Street Journal:

Lanny Breuer, assistant attorney general in charge of the criminal division, and his staff reacted with alarm in the spring of 2010 after they learned about the tactics.
The officials were apparently unaware at the time that the same tactics were in use in a 2009-2010 ATF operation called Fast and Furious, which has come to haunt the Justice Department.
Mr. Breuer, in an interview Monday, addressed the Fast and Furious case in detail for the first time.

He said he now regretted he didn't do more to raise concerns about the tactics, known as gun-walking, with Mr. Holder and others.

"I thought this was an isolated matter from '06-07," Mr. Breuer said. "I wish I had alerted the deputy and the attorney general. I didn't recognize there was this other case out there that had probably, not identical, but comparable problems."
In an April 2010 email Jason Weinstein, a senior official in Mr. Breuer's office, describes being "stunned" at learning about the ATF tactics.

"ATF [headquarters] should/will be embarrassed that they let this many guns walk," Mr. Weinstein says.
Let us hope that the Honorable Rep. Darrell Issa (R., Calif.), chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, and Honorable Sen. Charles Grassley (R., Iowa), continue the congressional probe of Fast and Furious to conclusion.

Good publicity a higher priority at ATF than interdiction?

Documents released Tuesday by Senator Charles Grassley relating to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ “gunwalking” activities dating back to late 2009 – a year before Operation Fast and Furious imploded with the slaying of Border Patrol agent Brian Terry – strongly suggest that the ATF was far more interested in big splash publicity than in keeping guns out of the hands of Mexican criminals.

"I thought this was an isolated matter from '06-07,"

That says plenty and not what many here want to think.

Remember this dude? Alberto Gonzales? Gonzales became Attorney General in February 2005

Their biggest regret is that they were caught deceiving the public.
