Open Carry Confusion in OK, where the wind comes sweeping down the plains

When Gov. Fallin pulled the trigger on the open carry law, Evan Wilbanks started predicting problems. He's a firearms instructor, and while he stands for the Second Amendment, he also believes carrying a gun openly goes too far.

"I'm not a big advocate of walking into an establishment with a firearm. I feel it makes you a target,” said Wilbanks.

The bill prohibits carrying firearms on city, state, or federal property. You can't pack heat in schools or sporting events either.

    ...snip....

One firearms instructor we spoke with said he has talked to people who assume open carry means no permit necessary. That is not the case you do need a permit for open or concealed carry.

My Comments: Looks like a need for more Public Education in OK on this.

Sounds much like the same argument all "anti's" use. (ie, "If we allow everyone to carry guns the streets will turn into the "Wild West" with an increase in gun related crime.")

The trouble is "feelings" will often conflict with actual FACTS.

I CC, but live in an state where OC is legal (GA). One of the benefits I see with OC being legal, is that I don't have to worry if my shirt/ jacket moves & exposes my gun. In some places, that would be illegal if there is CC only.

OC'ing might make you a target to certain BGs, but that just means when you OC, your SA should be through the roof at all times while in public. It doesn't mean you shouldn't carry that way, though.

I, for one, will rarely open carry. I'm happy with the law as it will take away the fear of accidental exposure causing problems. As for education, it's not that hard. The only thing that changes is that people who can conceal will be able to carry openly. Same places, same restrictions, it just adds open carry as an option. I don't understand what's so hard to, well, understand.

And I'll be that after a short string of arrests or citations people will want to actually know what the laws are. It won't take long and it will catch on.

This was taken into consideration when the law was written. The legislature left in provisions allowing a person to opt out of being a target by either carrying concealed or not carrying at all. Mr. Wilbanks should feel at ease knowing that.

Doesn't surprise me this story is from the Tulsa area. It's probably the most liberal part of the state.

Well, remember the reading level in most USA public schools, is just not too high anymore.
And most people tend to get their information by word of mouth, rather than checking real sources for accurate information.

Fast.. speed... and now ... generation. No time to look up things and actually "read them " ....

Some, may learn the hard way, that reading ... may have kept them out of the jail.

I don't know, I've never heard of a police station or gun shop being robbed. The BG knows they have guns openly so that makes them all targets right? What about the videos of robberies were I see the guy walk around and check out all the people in the gas station to make sure they dont have weapons... Oh that's right, they don't.

20 years ago the hunting crowd openly apposed the "need" to posses an AR15 ........... 20 years later you see a lot of deer hunters hunting deer (and many other animals) with AR15's and their variants.

The Ignorant (whom I suggest are the majority) always seem to appose anything new. The more the great unwashed are exposed to open carry the more accepted it becomes.
