Zonker1986, I live in NJ! I would be quite upset if NJ fell into the ocean!

So, your neighbor rats on you and your gun.

Be sure to rat them out to the IRS for the income they certainly won't declare on their 1040!

That's how it worked in Nazi Germany....... turn in your neighbor if they were a Jew, turn in your neighbor if they said something negative about Hitler, turn you neighbor in .... for dang near anything. And if they didn't like thier neighbor.... they made up something in order to watch the SS haul them off and get them to confess under torture that it was true.

Wow, after reading some replies I think some of you could solicit donations for the NRA.

    HE SAID ILLEGAL GUNS.

The OP is the one that made up the headline "Turn in your gun owning neighbors"

I'm sure the Mayor is going after bad guys doing the shooting of innocents! We all know New Jersey is not gun friendly.

If you are not prohibited from owning or carrying a gun in NJ this obviously does not apply! I'm guessing Illegal guns mean the following.

Guns in the hands of felons:

Guns in the hands of convicted domestic violence offenders:

    Carrying without a permit:

    Owning a defaced gun:

    Possession of a stolen gun:

Possession of a gun used in a crime.

Is it so bad to get these people and guns off the street? After all the Mayor is doing more than Mayors of other cities to try and get the guns off the streets. The Mayor is only offering an incentive for something citizens should do in the first place. How is this different from offering reward for felons or citizens simply calling the police on drug dealers or other criminal activity?

If you are a law abiding gun owner this does not and can't apply to you. Fear Mongering at it's highest.

A group of neighbors and myself have been compiling a list of licence plates, car make and model, time and duration of suspected drug buyers and dealers of a local drug house. Are we Nazis? Our efforts got the dealer out of our community. The only difference is we received no money for our efforts.

Eric - I understand what you're saying, and no the Mayor is not asking citizens to turn in law-abiding neighbors with guns, but the problem is this: how does one know if a person is carrying a gun illegally just by spotting a person on the street? Sure, this would be good for someone with a room mate who has a gun and a rap sheet, but this will most certainly lead to a lot of MWAG calls in the hopes that the MWAG has one illegally. That means more wasted time for the police tracking down law-abiding citizens because their neighbors are hoping for a payout.

This "plan" smells like an attempt to make carrying a firearm such a hassle that many will stop trying to defend themselves just so that they won't get stopped by the police every other day. There's also the angle that maybe this is an attempt to find out who has guns for future seizure. Who knows, but I don't see this turning out well for the innocent gun toter.

I don't think a lone NJ Mayor is trying to compile a list of gun owners for seizure. The Mayor is asking for tips to come to a dedicated line.

Also for the most part, big brother already knows who own firearms through,

The Federal background checks when you purchase a firearm:
    CC Licenses:
    Transaction records from gun shops:
    Visiting sites like this

I think private transfers are the only way to shield yourself.

I agree completely. Personally, I'm not too worried about the government coming after my guns. I know others here are expecting it any day, and I respect that, because I understand what the government is capable of, even if it isn't inevitable or even likely (IMO). Seizure aside, I think the policy will wind up wasting a lot of time, money, and resources on MWAG calls due to the greed of the average person. Who wouldn't want an easy thousand bucks just by ratting on someone with a gun?

What if Arizona offered money to anyone who could find an illegal Mexican. Everyone seems willing to allow racial profiling to ask for their papers. If you really want to get the job done...why not offer money?

I'm all for immigrant labor, at least they're working and not collecting welfare and contributing to our economy.

It is kind of funny to see this as an example in a thread where members fear big brother knowing about our guns. I'm sure you meant this in jest.

This is Newark, NJ. It is virtually impossible to obtain a carry permit without being law enforcement, or ex law enforcement. It's similar to Maryland, in that you need to show cause in order to obtain your CCW. Therefore, reading between the lines, I think he implies nobody really has a legal gun to carry.

According to the article below, which is from 2010 only 1595 CCW permits have been issued to citizens, excluding permits for armored car employees and retired police officers. This is out of a state population of 8.7million. This is 0.002% of the population. Therefore, the chances of having a lawful carrier are very slim. Moreover, in Newark, if you have a gang banging troublemaker next door, you would probably know if he carried a gun, or have strong suspicions, given how close everyone lives to each other in this urban environment.
