College campus police profiling gun owners...

Took my son to college today for orientation. Parents and kids separate to attend different indoc stuff. Afterwards my son says before students introduced themselves the campus police asked "Is there anyone here who hunts or owns guns?" Several students raise their hands, my son noted the police were writing down their names as they introduced themselves. Boy that jerks my chain! I understand the concern, but I don't like the method used. It was deceptive imho.

What is the concern of theirs that you understand? what business is it of theirs anyways? What if they asked who has ever had mental problems or relatives that have been committed? What if they asked are there any here who have Aids? Or asked if anyone had an STD.. At what point do their questions become intrusive? Why do people put up with this?

If it were at my college I think everyone would raise their hand. But this does make me wonder.

Wonder if all those who were identified will get unannounced dorm room searches the first couple of weeks after the start of classes?

Ask you son, after he is settled in the dorms to get cozy with the dorm floor supervisor (cannot remember the propper name of the person - usually a senior student or grad student who monitors the floor for a free room), and see if they already have his name as a potential 'danger' or person to watch.

Maybe they thought the Campus PD was hiring auxillary and were looking for students with firearms experience.

Or they were not trained well enough to keep a low profile.

To the OP, where is this school located? In a Progressive area or more Conserative area?

And did your son say why they said they were asking the question? Did the police or anyone take that opportunity to
restate whatever the campus policy is (and probably the law in the state) on keeping weapons on campus?

I think you are worrying about nothing, and as you have already chosen to use the word "indoc" for whatever was
being conveyed, just maybe you should take this opportunity to remove your son now, as you clearly believe
that the purpose of the school is to indoctrinate rather than educate and inform; or at least you seem to fear that.

I have a hunch your son is going to learn a lot you won't like during the first year. If you aren't ready for him to learn,
and if he is going to view everything presented to him as something to challenge and resist, as "indoc," remove him now, save yourself money and aggravation, and take him to a school that will suit your belief system.

Otherwise, lean back, relax, and you will find that your kid will have a great time, and a great learning experience from which he will emerge the better.

Huh. Never occurred to me. That must be it.

Sounds more like a "P" hunt: papers, proclivities, predilections, portents. I can understand the desire to have a safer environment, at a campus in a state where it's unlawful to have weapons. And I can understand statements being made during orientation to introduce what doesn't fly at the school and how such things will be handled. But only experience will help these newbies appreciate the value of circumspection.

    Hopyard,
Yes they did state weapons policy after posing the question. Clearly you misjudge me...again. "Indoc" is in reference to the two day welcome aboard classes both parents and students attend. It covers financing and school policies, procedures, tours, ect. Was not referring to any other meaning. Not worried at all, just ticks me off that this was done. For one if they are looking for potential active shooters the information they sought would not help imo. If they are just looking for who to concentrate on for either dorm or vehicle searches, they are just as wrong in methodology. My belief system is not an issue here whatsoever. I am Conservative and Pro Second Amendment but it would be ignorant of me to think any college would respect that. The college is impressive, with a good reputation. They mostly all lean left imho, bothers me but so what. We live in an imperfect world. Posted this to get opinions on the subject and see if this is common place. Iwant my son to be in a safe environment just disagree with how the subject is approached. I'd much rather have the campus police be armed and well trained in how to deal with an active shooter. IMHO they should have told the kids WHAT to do if such an event happens. My biggest worry is the kids driving skills or lack there of. Much improvement needed! I am very much looking forward to my son having a good life experience in college. I am happy for him, just not looking forward to paying for this!

Using deceptive and less-than-forthright methods in the attempt to garner information is hardly new, or surprising. If people are willing to volunteer personal information, police are certainly willing to note it for future fishing expeditions.
