Just watched an interesting episode of "The Rifleman"

Today I saw an episode of the Rifleman titled "Anvil Chorus", originally broadcast in 1962.

The storyline was that the normal Sheriff had to leave town, so the local blacksmith took over as sheriff temporarily. The blacksmith had a great idea, if he took everybody's guns, there would be no trouble. Even though the Rifleman is not especially high drama, there were some interesting exchanges among the characters about gun ownership and individual rights.

Well it seems that some bad guys came to town and quickly figured out that nobody in the town had any guns. So, the bad guys started doing what bad guys do. Not surprisingly the Rifleman came in at the last minute and saved the town (who would have guessed).

At the conclusion of the show everybody figured out that individuals do indeed need to be able to protect themselves from evil.

Isn't it interesting how some ideas are timeless ??

Great show. I watch it all the time. Actually, from what I have read about "the old west" it was common place for the the sherriff to confiscate weapons and have curfews. Funny how folks think everything was so peachy back then!

Could it be that back then it was felt that the Constitution was only written to control the new Federal Government and that the everyone else was free to govern themselves? So long as they did not try to usurp one of the limited powers granted to the Federal Government in that Constitution?

I am no expert. I am actually going to read more about it. Times have always been a changing and the Constitution has been interpreted before the ink was even dry...

May, 1960-Francis Gary Powers shot down, triggering further deterioration of already tense US/Soviet relations
April, 1961-Failed Bay of Pigs Invasion creates a huge international embarrassment for the US
August, 1962-After multiple attempts by US to oust Castro, USSR secretly begins installing both strategic and tactical nuclear weapons on Cuba
October, 1962-Discovery of those weapons by US and the ensuing confrontation takes the world to the very brink of thermonuclear war
December, 1962- The aforementioned episode of "The Rifleman" aired

    Yes, timeless.

You know, what strikes me even more now that I think about it is that nowadays no liberal bleeding heart network would allow a show on TV that demonstrated the folly of taking everybodys guns away and promotes the idea of our second amendment rights.

I remember those days. Pretty scary times. Everyone listened to the evening news to hear what was happening. We had good leadership then, not so good now.

Wasn't the Sheriff named Micah? In order to give Chuck Connors reason to deal with most of the BG's, the script usually had Micha out of town, sick, too busy, or whatever. Trouble would come to town, Chuck Connors would stop plowing, go deal with it, and Micah would reappear once the gunsmoke cleared. ROFL, even as kids we were suspicious of the sheriff's motives and his "arrangement" with Chuck Connors.

That's interesting I'd like to see the "Anvil Chorus" episode.
Turn the election's in 2014 to a "2A Revolution". It will serve as a 1994 refresher not to "infringe" on our Second Amendment. We know who they are now.........SEND 'EM HOME. Our success in this will be proportional to how hard we work to make it happen.
