STAT OF THE DAY
Florida About to Be the First State with a Million Concealed Carry Gun Permits

In the wake of the gun control debate raging after the Aurora shooting last week, we hear that Florida will soon have one million people in possession of concealed weapons. According to The South Florida Sun-Sentinel by way of The Awl, this will make the state — which is issuing between 10,000 and 12,000 "carry permits" a month — the first to reach this somewhat dubious "milestone." The state's agriculture commissioner told the paper that at the rate the state is going, it will get to a million by the next six weeks or two months.
So who is walking around with a concealed weapon in Florida? Well, 80 percent are middle-aged men:
Of Florida's 952,000 total permit holders, the majority, 243,505, are between the ages of 51 and 65. About 11 percent of all permit holders are from out of state.
The Sun-Sentinel reports that the number of permits being obtained began to rise with the election of President Obama.
The spokesman for the department that handles carry permits said there is "always seems to be a concern when there's a change in federal administration, when there might be some attention placed on gun control laws."

I know quite a few people who have a Florida CHL, even though they live out of state (since the Florida CHL is recognized in states that their local state's CHL is not recognized).
I am opposed to the idea of actually NEEDING a CHL. The Founding Fathers did not put any restrictions on open or concealed carry in the 2nd Amendment, so we should not need to have a CHL. The very idea of having to get a CHL is just the undoing of what the NRA and their anti-2nd-Amendment management did to us oh so many years ago. The NRA was not a friend of the 2nd Amendment back then.

I agree with your sentiments in regard to CHLs and permits. It's laws like these that prevent us from being a truly free nation.

But the Anti's say that the 2A uses the word 'Regulated' = so they must regulate us. Yes, I agree also.
They should worry about regulating 'Crazy People' and 'Criminals' to solve this problem, not Free People with the proven ability to self-regulate in society = Us.

The leftists (or "antis" as you call them) want to use the definition of a word today to redefine what was meant by the definition of a word way back then. Kind of sounds like Billy-Boy Klinton and his definition of "having sex". Back then, "well regulated militia" mean well trained or proficient. They were basically saying that since it is very important for our militia to be proficient and since EVERY citizen is part of the citizen militia and since we might need to citizen militia for defense from a foreign power or for even overthrowing our own government if it becomes too oppressive, we shall not in ANY case make ANY rule that would prevent a person from being able to bear ANY arm. Unfortunately, they used a bit too flowery of language and it allows the leftists to try to use today's meaning of the word to reinterpret the Founding Fathers' intended meaning.

Congratulations FLA, I like reading this, but I'm curious about the factors that will give you this distinction. I'm guessing it is the combination of a pretty heavily populated state coupled with a reasonably easy process of getting a concealed permit?
I'd also like to think that quite a few FLA residents are transplants from other states that would never offer them a permit, and they are eager to exercise their 2A rights in FLA.
FWIW, our state is heavy in middle-aged males with permits too. I think the reason for that is we know we ain't bulletproof any more
Turn the election's in 2014 to a "2A Revolution". It will serve as a 1994 refresher not to "infringe" on our Second Amendment. We know who they are now.........SEND 'EM HOME.

Florida got an early start (it might have even been the first) with the shall-issue CHL. That, combined with a large population, would have helped its numbers a lot. Louisiana considers your vehicle as part of your domicile, so many gun owners did not see a particular need for a CHL. Combining that with a lower population would keep the CHL numbers down a bit. Thanks to (unconstitutional) government regulations (e.g. Brady Bill, required NICS checks, etc), there are a lot of people who don't carry, but liked the fact that a CHL allowed them to purchase a firearm a lot quicker, so they went ahead and got one. Some people only carry in their car, but they want to minimize the harassment by LEOs in various states, so they get a CHL. Of course, the NRA's actions many years ago are what got us into the situation in that now we have to get a license to do something that was perfectly legal prior to their support of legislation that infringed upon our 2nd Amendment rights.

Louisiana has also had an increase in gang activity by the blacks over the last 30 or so years and as such, the older white males have realized that they need to be responsible for the safety of themselves and their families since the police are not willing to intimidate the young black males into conforming to civilized society like they were more than willing to do back in the 1950s and 1960s (and even somewhat in the early 1970s).
Well, that's my impression from living up in the NE Texas / NW Louisiana area a few decades ago and having friends and relatives that still live in that area.

Congrats Florida! It sounds like the AG's office in Kansas has been pretty busy with applications the last several months. I doubt we'll ever rival Floridas numbers but I do hope we get our numbers up.

this is already running elsewhere
I don't carry a gun to look for or start a fight. I carry one to finish a fight I never wanted to be in.

Meanwhile, Vermont still on track as the only state that never required permits at all... as it should be.
