CNN Poll: Gun control opinions following shootings – CNN Political Ticker - CNN.com Blogs

A quick read and it shows virtual unanimity on issues like limiting mentall ill, felons, etc. from possessing guns and the use of NICS type background checks. Other areas show differences but the final outcome is a split down the middle with no change over thelast decade.

Just means the average Joe needs more positive exposure to firearms.

It could also mean that the average citizen is smart enough to know the difference between crazy wackos and the typical citizen / gun owner.

All I'm hearing are comments about the need to outlaw guns, especially assault type weapons and large magazines. Perhaps it's just the liberals among us speaking their mind but I hear it louder and more demanding than ever.

And, of course, the poll is taken right after a national tragedy. I just love CNN.

Dude, they manned up and said that despite the recent tragedies the data did not change. People's attitudes have been the same for a decade

It is exactly what I would expect. The 10% who favor a complete ban are grouped together with the 38% who favor severe restrictions on the criminally-inclined or mentally ill to conclude that about 50% favor complete bans or major restrictions. One portion states that 50% favor little or no restriction, and another states that 60% favor a ban on semi-autos and hi-cap mags. This is an exercise in fun with numbers, and nothing else.

So, the poll after the tragedy was just a coincidence?

91% support laws to prevent convicted felons or people with mental health problems from owning guns. There are already provisions for this.....

No! They did the poll expecting that there would be a change and then admitted that there wasn't a change.

    This comment just astounds me:

I believe everyone has the right to own a gun, or even more than one gun. I also believe there MUST be sensible limits on the type of weapons and ammunition a private citizen can own. I would like to see these restrictions. First, nothing automatic or semi-automatic. Second, for handguns, you can only own a revolver, six shot maximum. Rifle, to chamber a new round requires a discrete action such as a bolt action reload. Shotgun, no more than two barrels, and reloading requires breaking down the gun. Complete elimination of clips and magazines.
I know, the bad guys will have us outgunned. Well, guess what, they already do. These restrictions will have no impact on hunters, target shooters or people wanting to own a weapon for self defense. They will reduce the likelihood that a crazy person can legally buy a weapon capable of killing scores of people with non-stop firing.
You can't stop crazy people from buying guns. Who are the crazys? Are you suggesting we all take a crazy test before being allowed to by a gun? If so, how often does the crazy test need to be re-taken.

The trouble imho is that while the tragic consequences of an incident such as Aurora are front page news that guarantees all the talking heads will weigh in with an opinion, not very many of the CCWer-in-the-internet-cafe stories make it to the same level of dissemination. Bad news sells. Good news...different story.

It would be an interesting research project to try to determine how many lives are saved everyday from good guys doing what they do and then compare that to the whackos.

The other side of this, as I see it, is that the type of weapons that the antis want to ban are, in reality, the exact type of weapons that the 2A is all about. The 2A is as much about protecting ourselves from a tyrannical government as it is a thug trying to take our wallet/purse!
