2012 DNC platform plank on firearms

copied this morning - this is it!:

Firearms. We recognize that the individual right to bear arms is an important part of the American tradition, and we will preserve Americans’ Second Amendment right to own and use firearms. We believe that the right to own firearms is subject to reasonable regulation. We understand the terrible consequences of gun violence; it serves as a reminder that life is fragile, and our time here is limited and precious. We believe in an honest, open national conversation about firearms. We can focus on effective enforcement of existing laws, especially strengthening our background check system, and we can work together to enact commonsense improvements – like reinstating the assault weapons ban and closing the gun show loophole – so that guns do not fall into the hands of those irresponsible, law-breaking few.

    Obiwan, there's a follow-up.

Dianne Feinstein has announced she will introduce the gun ban legislation.

I wrote about it in Thursday's morning Examiner column. Dianne always gives me something to write about.

"REASONABLE REGULATION" is the key phrase here. To a liberal this obviously means anything they can think up to slowly erode our God given rights! We need to vote the liberals out of office, from the president on down the line to the local level, while we still can, and while the Constitution is still intact!

"We believe that the right to own firearms is subject to reasonable regulation."

Yeah, reasonable to whom? To me? To you? To Feinstein? Who gets to decide who sets the "reasonable" standard? Bear in mind that a change in the "reasonable regulation" could very well make many of us "non-law abiding" and subject to criminal prosecution.

One thing is certain, that between now and the beginning of Nov there is going to be a boat load of FUD articles, quotes, and comments all designed to persuade you to support a particular organization.

It remains important to use your eyes, ears and ability to think as well as evaluate any candidate based upon their stance and track record. Blanket "gun grab" statements and articles are pointless and while possibly tolerated (maybe they shouldn't be) aren't the least bit persuasive.

I don't get that God given part... what does it say in the constition? I couldn't find any mention of God there.
How do you derive this right from divine intervention?

Chicago has "reasonable regulation". Look how well it is working for them.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure our rights are granted by the Constitution. But then again, based just on posts at this site, some people seem to worship the Constitution as a religion.

The constitution does not give us any rights - It guarantees us the rights we were born with. If you believe God sent you here, fine, if you believe you showed up out of chance, fine.
Governments can only take away rights - The US Constitution does not take away our right to self preservation, via the 2nd ammendment.

Don't over look Massachusetts where in 2004 Romney signed what the AP would later call “one of the toughest assault weapons laws in the country.”

Don't forget the 2008 Obama platform on guns:
Urban Policy | Change.gov: The Obama-Biden Transition Team
    Address Gun Violence in Cities:
Obama and Biden would repeal the Tiahrt Amendment, which restricts the ability of local law enforcement to access important gun trace information, and give police officers across the nation the tools they need to solve gun crimes and fight the illegal arms trade. Obama and Biden also favor commonsense measures that respect the Second Amendment rights of gun owners, while keeping guns away from children and from criminals. They support closing the gun show loophole and making guns in this country childproof. They also support making the expired federal Assault Weapons Ban permanent.
You can't go directly to change.gov to see it anymore, but they never actually took the page down. A quick google search for "tiahrt amendment site:change.gov" will take you to it... scroll down to "Crime and Law Enforcement".

Governor Romney wasn't exactly a gun-rights advocate... though his statement was that he improved the situation as much as he could. I don't know if I buy that, but I'm guessing that he'll toe the party line as President. As opposed to Obama, who has had an anti-gun stance every time he's had a chance to express it.

"reasonable regulation" by the folks that want to ban large soda size is probably not going to seem "reasonable" to any of us.
