What they should do is put a tax on crime. Non violent crime you have to pay the county 10% of your take. Because of the higher expense to the city for crimes of violence their cut goes up to 25%. Crime goes up, it is money for the city. Crime goes down, they can say their plan worked.
The only way they can lose is if the criminals don't pay. And every crook in Chicago since Capone got convicted knows you have to pay your taxes.

This is not a new concept and will not be the last such tax coming from various governments. Can you say "sin" taxes, taxes on alcohol, etc. Governments seek money and come up with "taxes" to obtain the money. However this specific tax is an infringement to the 2nd amendment.

Second Amendment -- Established December 15, 1791 and slowly eroded ever since
What happened to "..... shall not be infringed."

Interesting, I just saw Crowman's sig line in the thread on word association... and was going to copy it here with a little addendum...
"One of the greatest delusions in the world is the hope that the evils in this world are to be cured by legislation"....
--Thomas B. Reed, American Attorney
...add or taxation to that line...
And speaking of sin tax... until prohibition, there was no income tax... the taxes on alcohol were 1/3 of the national budget...
I learned that on public television... Ken Burns' Prohibition

They are not trying to stop violence. They are trying to figure out how to get around the right to bear arms.
One only need look at tobacco taxes to see the effectiveness of a heavy tax burden. None of the stop smoking campaigns were effective in controlling tobacco use. When those fighting tobacco changed their tactics and decided to use extreme and burdensome taxes they finally got the results they were looking for.
The idea of the gun tax has nothing to do with health care costs or violence. It is meant solely as a way to make the product to expensive for normal citizens to own.

There should be a "violence tax" on the perps, first. Call it a "ventilation tax."

They are aware that people can just buy ammo online, arent they? I seriously have to wonder just what is wrong with these people, then again they think the same about us as well. So long as all the gang-bangers and scum stay down there and not attempt to move anywhere else, Ill live and let live.

Many online retailers will not ship to Chicago.

It makes sense doesn't it? Nothing is too expensive to steal or bring in to a city. Now if they could get the criminal to pay a tax on those stolen guns or a crime tax after they do it, then that will be something.

So are the taxes on machine guns, short shotguns, suppressors, etc.
The only organization that could have fought those in court was the NRA. They did not.

There are two objectives here: (1) infringe on the right to keep and bear arms, and (2) add revenue. IMHO these people are revolting against Heller and if some extra revenue is forthcoming then so much the better. It will take sustained, well-funded campaigns to elect officials in our camp. I hope someday that will happen...perhaps after concealed carry is adopted by the good citizens of IL.

OK, now exactly HOW do the dirtbags line up to pay their stolen gun/ammo tax?
"That I cannot do."

They don't. We cover their share, of course. But, anything for politicians to fund the gaping maw and keep themselves employed.
