'Meet the Press' Lands NRA CEO for Sunday | TheWrap TV
NBC's "Meet the Press" has landed NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre for an
interview Sunday in which he will respond to calls for more gun control
following the Newtown, Conn. school shooting.
The NRA was silent for several days...... The group said its effort would begin with a news conference Friday.
NBC News said that LaPierre would appear on "Meet the Press" on Sunday
"for an exclusive conversation about gun control and what he thinks
should be done to curb the threat of violence in America."
Last Sunday, "Meet the Press" reached out to all 31 U.S. senators who
back gun rights, but none would agree to appear on the show, host David
Gregory said. "Face the Nation," another Sunday show, also said it was
unable to find guests willing to make the case last Sunday for gun rights.

National Rifle Association CEO Wayne LaPierre will be the "exclusive"
guest on NBC's Meet the Press on December 23, nine days after the
horrific shooting in Newtown, CT, and five days after the NRA mustered
the courage to finally comment on the tragedy. Meet the Press moderator
David Gregory is soliciting questions for LaPierre via Twitter, and
we're happy to propose a few that touch on LaPierre's and the NRA's
credibility on gun rights, drawing from LaPierre's long record of
conspiratorial rhetoric in the name of aiding the firearms lobby.

There are signs that the National Rifle Association’s power to block
gun-control legislation is beginning to slip after the mass murder in
Newtown, Connecticut, last Friday.
Most visibly, if also vaguely, President Obama said Sunday that he’d
“use whatever power this office holds . . . in an effort aimed at
preventing more tragedies like this.” More surprisingly, and maybe more
tellingly, Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia, an unyielding gun-rights
supporter and NRA member, said Monday, “I don’t know anyone in the
sporting or hunting arena that goes out with an assault rifle. I don’t
know anyone that needs 30 rounds in a clip to go hunting. I mean, these
are things that need to be talked about.” Joe Scarborough, the former
Republican Congressman who is host of MSNBC’s Morning Joe, said the
shooting made his former pro-gun views suddenly “irrelevant” and called
support for the assault weapon the killer used “nonsense.” Those people
weren’t saying anything like that before now.

Those following the gun control legislation bubbling up on Capitol Hill
must be getting a lot of déjà vu, since similar legislation made its way
through Congress 20 years ago. We're specifically talking about the ban
on assault rifles that was supported by Sen. Diane Feinstein in 1994 and
a new one she says she'll introduce in 2013. Thanks largely to the
National Rifle Association (NRA) and others in the gun lobby,
Feinstein's original ban expired in 2004 but not before gun
manufacturers came up with all kinds of ways to get around the law,
leaving some to wonder if it was even effective in the first place.

While I wish I didn't I have a gut feeling the NRA is going to say they will not oppose a new ban on certain weapons. Sure hope I'm wrong.
Personally i will never call AR15, M19, AK47 assault weapons since they are nothing more that a rifle just as revolvers are revolvers. I believe any weapon that can shoot bullets are basically assault weapons. Even in a self defense situation one has to "assault" the bad guy in order to survive.
