This morning I came across a post in a very popular leftist blog dealing with the (pending) proposal for an AWB and other assorted forms of gun control. The gist of the article, which is oriented towards those on the left, is that there is not enough (political) resource to fight for excessive gun control and have any hope of achieving other left oriented issues. The additional point is made that attempting to cram unpopular gun control down peoples throats could very well jeopardize their position and ability on other issues of greater importance such as social security reform. The article acknowledges that there are many Democrats who are gun owners and are opposed to these calls for gun control from the radical party base. In the article and in the comments, the point is also made about an AWB being useless in terms of preventing mass shootings and that efforts would be much better spent dealing with the people issues that are the root cause of violence, including gun violence. While not everyone agrees with the author's sentiments, I thought that it made for an insightful read and would like to share and suggest giving it a read, including the comments section. Link: here.
And here are a few highlights from the article and comments:
To my untrained eye, this all reads as DiFi's AWB being DOA, a complete non-starter, and frankly, a waste of timeThe absolute obsession gun controllers have with "assault weapons" can not, then have any relation to the harm done with them, but instead what they purport to represent: the "idea" of a weapon "designed to kill people". They're trying to ban the mean thought behind the weapon, not the weapon itself.Considering the history of attacks from the two main supporters of a new AWB on the rest of the bill of rights, you'd think people would be more skeptical of the real intent. DiFi has been a lapdog for every executive power grab, every infringement on privacy and due process that has occurred in the last 12 years. Michael Bloomberg - in addition to his dubious methods of changing the law to allow himself to run for a third term - is notorious for considering the out-of-control OWS-terrorizing NYPD to be his personal army. But, no, they're just proposing the AWB out of a sincere sad for the little childrens, not to advance an over-arching police state agenda. Shame on any Democrat who allies with themHave we relinquished the idea of personal responsibility for our actions and those of our children to regulation by a Bureaucracy? Is saying "NO, that's wrong, and I won't abide by this" so damaging to the development of a child, that it can never be said by a parent, or teacher? Why is Prison our first meaningful interaction conveying "limits" on juvenile actions? The grave being the other option.
