Summary of links and other stuff in the news I cannot link: Virginia Wesleyan College (Methodist affiliated). Unarmed security guard loses contact with his dispatcher. At shift change (!!!), somebody goes to look for him. Finds him dead in a building, of stab wound. College president thinks that trimming bushes and installing more lights will help with safety, but disagrees that arming security is the answer. Relatives and students speak out about this deplorable state of affairs, wondering how security can protect the students when they are not allowed to carry a gun to protect themselves (sounds like the lights are coming on, oh so dimly). Subsequently, the president says they are looking at all options when asked about arming the guards. States that only one of five wesleyan colleges in VA have armed security. Most other colleges in area have their own police force.

I can tell you why they are reluctant: Perception.
If parents come to the college and see armed security guards, they'll wonder about how dangerous the place really is if armed security is needed.
Remember they cater to mostly sheeple. Logic has nothing to do with it.
You have to make the shot when fire is smoking, people are screaming, dogs are barking, kids are crying and sirens are coming.

I did a little research, and was moved to send this letter to the editor:
Virginian Pilot Editor,
A visit to Virginia Wesleyan's website reveals that: 1. Students are ultimately responsible for their own safety; 2. Students enjoy all freedoms expressed in the Constitution and laws of the US and Virginia; and 3. possession of firearms is prohibited.
It's time for somebody over there at VWU to pull their head out of their hole in the ground and face reality. Either allow students to possess firearms for safety, or admit that they are sheep for the slaughter, and not deserving of basic human rights.

I heard the Dean over at VWU on the news last week. He said that for added protection we trimmed down the bushes and trees. I was like ***? He also mentioned that there's talk that they may arm one of there security guards. [This makes me feel so much safer, not! When will they learn?]

Never, I'm afraid.

I used to work for a contract security firm as an armed security guard. We had cars and we went from one company to another checking their property. If somebody went off the air, the nearest unit was required to go to their location at best possible speed to make sure everything was ok. Had this been this college's policy they might have reached the guard before he bled out. Stupidity on all fronts.
