Gotta love when the government responds to freedom of information act requests by releasing information protected by the privacy act... Only in America.
The problem with gun control is that drugs are already illegal.

It's all stupid. They wouldn't like it if they had their info posted online for everyone. It's public record but they didn't intend it to be posted online for everyone who didn't personally request the info in person. You can go down and obtain the info, but where does it say you can disseminate it at your leisure?

I am so glad Florida fixed this prob in 2006 in response to this:

In May 2005, the Northwest Florida Daily News posted on its website
the names and addresses of roughly 5,000 holders of
concealed-weapon permits in Okaloosa, Walton and Santa Rosa counties.

You should not be mad at the newspaper or website that disseminates the information, you should be mad at the government agency that releases the information. The information they released was protected by the privacy act of 1974. The privacy act applies to government agencies, not the media.

When you sign up for the permit in NY, it says it is public record and anyone can obtain this information by request.

"NOTICE Pursuant to Penal Law Section 400.00(5), the name and address of any person to whom an application for any license has been granted, shall be a public record."

So...the government allows for this but did they allow for the public posting on the internet?

At least the article leading up to the list was fair and balanced as well as the title of the article. Read the comments though and not too many people agreed with the authurs point of view.

So...the government allows for this but did they allow for the public posting on the internet?

They HAVE to allow the news station to publish it on the internet. Read the Privacy Act and you will see that it is ILLEGAL for any government agency as defined in that document to release certain combinations of information to the public. One example of information that is protected by the privacy act is a full name and home address.

Wait, wait... Let me break it down.

    1) They say it's public record which means anyone can obtain it upon request. Correct?
    2) Since the paper obtained it they have to allow them to publish it? Correct?

So why is it illegal to release the address when that is in the information allowed to be released upon request? Are you saying that they can only release names and the addresses should be withheld? Anything else is not legal?

Fill in the gaps for me if you would please.

I would compare it to a doctor having you sign a release form to give him permission to do something illegal to you. He might not have to answer for breaking the law since you authorized it, but that doesn't change the law.

Well, at least the home invaders, thieves & rapists now can pick safer, easier targets by...a simple process of elimination.

You could release the same information around here with only ONE word - EVERYBODY!
