Chicago police chief: We’ll shoot licensed civilians with guns

I'm kind of ignorant on this. Is turning really all it takes? Or does the LEO wait for it to be pointed or at least raised? I'm no LEO so I don't know the procedure or practice for that situation.

The LEO's in the crowd will need to answer what their training is in such circumstances.

But basically it's incumbent on LEO's to attempt to distinguish between real and merely feared threats in all situations. And it's incumbent on citizens/civilians daring to carry on the streets to recognize that not everyone seeing a non-uniformed person aiming a firearm at another (the BG being held for LEO's) as being by default a GG. Ayoob and others have much to say in prior write-ups about how to deal with inbound LEO's and the risk of blowing the situation over assumptions and failure to effectively manage the changeover.

The poor Chicago chief should take a little professional tour down here in the Phoenix area where the safe and common assumption is that everyone the cops stop is armed. Yep, a few nitwits get shot each year, but it's nothing on the scale like he fears.

One night, I called the police .... some things showing up stolen, etc..... camper battery one night, something else the next night , etc. One "officer" I had contact with before (small town) has always seemed "weird". Ok .. I hear a knock on the door, take off my gun and put it up, then go answer the door. When I step out to talk to them.... the one is plastered up against the wall ... with his hand on his gun. I was really laughing about the sight of this ... when I was the one who called them. It reminded me a Charlie Chaplin movie.

Anyway...... he immediately asks me, "why did it take you so long to answer the door? " (1 minute ??) .... answered him. I'm typically on the other end of the house, and put my gun up before I answered the door.

OK... here goes the "dance" . He backs up 15 ft into the yard, hand on his gun, dancing and moving all around..... telling me "IF " he ever sees anyone with a gun for "any " reason ... he's going to shoot them. What the ? .... I commented, "you do realize, it's legal here to open carry on our own property don't you? " ... answer was " I don't care if I see anyone with a gun , I'ld shoot them" . Me : " I'm a cc holder, and any time you see me I most likely have a gun on me... are you telling me you are going to shoot me ? " . His answer, "yes, I will shoot you". "Even though you know I'm legal to carry it, have a license, and I'm not doing anything threatening in any manner to anyone ? " .... his answer "Yes, I'ld shoot you ... even if you aren't doing anything ".

His partner and I are looking at each other... like "are you believing this ?" . This goes on and on for awhile. Then I suggested to him ( his partner is now showing a lot of 'concern' about what this guy is saying and how he's dancing around in the yard with his hand on his gun.......) , "if you have this much fear and would shoot someone who's not doing anything illegal, not threatening anyone, maybe it's time you considered a new job and line of work".

I commented to his partner, are you talking to the Chief, or am I ? His comment, "I'll be talking to him, but maybe you should call him as well" . Within 30 days, the officer had an opportunity to look for a new job and career.

Here's my point..... it never bothered me that people were 'armed' .... my comment was always "as long as they don't have it pointed at my head, I'm not concerned" (you get the jest). But some Police Officers (rare but they are out there) are very very scared about the idea of anyone other than them having a gun. It's like this guy.... it shakes them up. The Police Chief in Chicago ... seems to be condoning, if not even encouraging that mentality and fear. Maybe ... it's time he looked for a new job and a new career too.

Just wow! That guy sounded like a absolute idiot. Makes one wonder what kind of training program they have there to allow this clown to dawn a uniform and badge and go forth to PROTECT AND SERVE. I say it that way because it seems those three words are slowly being forgotten by some agencies these days. It seems some folks think that because they are selected for one of these positions they are somehow now our superiors and have the right to enforce their particular agenda, be it right or wrong. I'm glad you were able to send this idiot packing and IMO, there's none more deserving then that clown. I'm sure you handled it much better than I would have. I would have been inclined to order him off my property and conduct the rest of the call with the other officer, or at minimum call for the supervisor to be sent out immediately.


As for the subject of this thread. I believe the guys statement is being taken outa context. Besides, every concealed carry person should know that, when the LEO'S show up, do not have a gun in your hand. It should be holstered or placed on the ground directly in front of you. Your hands should be clear and in plain sight while you do everything possible to identify yourself and follow the instructions given to you. I would say the holstered version is the best option at least for me anyway. Folks should put themselves in the officers shoes and decide how they would feel rolling up on an individual with a gun in his or her hands.

Lets face it, with everything that's happening right now, all the hype about banning semi-automatic guns and gun control, even though Illinois has proposed legislation to allow conceled carry, it isn't going to happen. Not with the atmosphere of fear that Joe Biden and the government is creating.

I can see a problem with off-duty officers carrying weapons. If they are not in uniform they will become targets just as CCWing residents. Sounds like he is making an open threat. The police are going to shoot some people just to prove their point. The victims could very well be one of their own. When the civil trials begin I'll bet he wishes he had never said those words. I am so very glad I do not live there. To all those who do live there, please be very careful if you have an encounter with any LEO.

Even off-duty LEOs are very adept at identifying themselves as officers.

They should actually have MORE guns on the street. Their utopia gun ban paradise is obviously not working. They should give every household in these crime ridden neighborhoods a firearm (assuming there is a resident that can legally possess one). Then we'll see how many random shootings there are. Problem is...gang members are acting with impunity now, and they know it. If they had some fear that somebody might defend themselves I bet they'd think twice. They may be punks, but they're not completely dumb.
