    1. Urgent Action item - let's contact our Senator and Delegate using VCDL's easy to use system
    ************************************************** **********

Let's flood the House with emails on the gun bills coming up in subcommittee on Thursday evening - VCDL makes it simple!

Click the link below to send an email to your Delegate. Just fill in a few fields and it will automatically figure out who your Delegate is. You can edit the message or just send it as is. Both work about the same.

    VCDL's "Write Your Legislators" Tool

Let's do the same for the Senate. There are a bunch of really bad gun-control bills being heard Friday morning. Click the link to send a prewritten message to your Senator (same as above: you fill in some information and you can edit the prewritten email if you wish):

    Let's roll!!

    2. Action item: let's pack the room on Thursday night!
    ************************************************** **********

Some important pro-gun and anti-gun bills will be heard by subcommittee #1 of the House Militia, Police, & Public Safety Committee tomorrow, THURSDAY, January 17, at 5 PM! The most important pro-gun bill of the session (Delegate Marshall's bill to allow teachers and others to be armed - HB 1557) will be heard, as will some anti-gun bills. Let's get a big turnout to support our rights and to fight off the gun control attempts!

The meeting is being held in the 4th Floor West Conference Room of the General Assembly Building in Richmond. I will be there with GSL stickers for everyone.

Here are the bills being heard:

    BILLS VCDL STRONGLY SUPPORTS

    • HB 1391 Possession of handguns in legislative buildings. VCDL only supports AS INTRODUCED

    • HB 1557 School boards; training for persons designated to carry concealed handguns on school property.

    BILLS VCDL STRONGLY OPPOSES

    • HB 1326 Concealed handgun permits; firearms safety courses.

    • HB 1410 Firearms; possession of weapons following conviction of certain crimes, penalty.

    • HB 1662 Libraries; locality to adopt an ordinance that prohibits firearms, ammunition, etc. in.

    • HB 1693 Firearms; removes specific exception for possession on public school property, penalty.

    • HB 2025 Firearms; requires background check for any purchase.

    • HB 2207 Sale, transfer, etc., of certain firearms and firearms magazines; penalty.

BILLS ON WHICH VCDL IS NEUTRAL

    • HB 1679 Concealed handgun permit; exception for retired investigator of security division of Lottery Department.

    ************************************************** **********
    3. Action Item: let's pack the room on Friday morning!
    ************************************************** **********

A large group of gun-control bills will be heard by the Senate Courts of Justice committee on Friday, January 18th, at 8 AM in Senate Room A in the General Assembly Building. After going through the metal detectors go to the left to get to Senate Room A. I will be there with GSL stickers for everyone.

    BILLS VCDL STRONGLY OPPOSES

    • SB 785, Marsden, makes you civilly liable if your guns are stolen and used in a crime if it is determined that you didn't secure them "well enough."

    • SB 788, Marsden, provides a civil penalty if your guns are stolen and you don't report the theft within 24 house of when you "should have known they were stolen."

    • SB 864, Favola, prohibits a person from transporting a firearm if they have an emergency protective order. It is not unusual to not even know that you have such an order against you and you aren't given a chance to contest the order. It's based on the unquestioned word of only one person.

    • SB 911, Howell, "gun show loophole" bill, tries to close a non-existent loophole

    • SB 965, Ebbin, makes you criminally liable if your guns are stolen and you don't report the theft within 24 house of when you "should have known they were stolen."

    • SB 1001, Marsh, "gun show loophole" bill, tries to close a non-existent loophole

    • SB 1012, Ebbin, bans all guns in Capitol Square, except for police and (wink, wink) the legislators themselves. A "hypocrite" bill

    • SB 1136, McEachin, requires private sales have a background check. This creates a defacto registration scheme which could then be used for later gun confiscations

    • SB 1148, McEachin, bans magazines with more than a 10 round capacity

    • SB 1128, Saslaw, totally guts Virginia's preemption laws, allowing localities to enact gun control as they please

    • SB 1232, Ebbin, requires private sales have a background check. This creates a defacto registration scheme which could then be used for later gun confiscations

    • SB 1281, Deeds, requires private sales have a background check. This creates a defacto registration scheme which could then be used for later gun confiscations

BILLS ON WHICH VCDL IS NEUTRAL

    • SB 1299, Edwards, provides certain records to the federal government dealing with prohibited persons

    • SB 1109, Ebbin, adds those who are disqualified from firearms ownership because of mental health issues to the list of people who guns should not knowingly be sold to.

Just got home from NOVA VCDL meeting.

Have you heard anything from tonight's committee meeting? PVC was in Richmond, but cell phone died so no update at meeting.

    Thumbs up

Sorry for the delay in the update. Had to drive in the results of the snowstorm to handle a situation.

Tonight at 5 PM we flooded the Militia, Police and Public Safety subcommittee #1! The anti-gun bills being heard tonight didn't just barely die, they were crushed. Of course there are plenty more bad bills out there, but this was a great start.

The room was PACKED beyond capacity, with people hanging out both doors into the halls! I didn't bring nearly enough GSL stickers :-(

The bad bills were killed with a **unanimous bi-partisan** vote.

Killed were bills to require background checks on private sales, to ban guns in libraries, to reduce the number of courses that qualify for getting a CHP, an assault weapon ban, and a ban on guns in vehicles on school property.

One setback was on Delegate Bob Marshall's school bill, HB 1557, which would allow certain people to carry concealed handguns to protect schools. It was referred to a commission set up by the Governor to vet such bills and the bill could still become law this year.

Soon I will have you emailing the Governor to encourage him to do just that. It's going to be a stretch, but we need to do our best to get the law fixed this year so as to avoid a massacre in a Virginia school.

I will say the support for Delegate Marshall's bill was impressive and even better than I had hoped. Few spoke against the bill.

Oh, there were a few antis there, including one who claimed her group has more members than there are gun owners (she called her group something like "Million Angry Moms" or something like that). For such a supposedly huge group, she was by herself. Hmmm. Surely she didn't exaggerate the size of her group?

Anyway, good job, VCDL! The battle is ON.

Today, Friday morning, January 18, we need to do it again. This time in the Senate Courts of Justice Committee starting at 8 AM. There is a huge load of really bad anti-gun bills that will be heard and the vote could be very tight.

I will bring more GSL stickers this time ;-)
