Oops! D.C., man shoots attacking dogs, and their victim.

Three pit bulls shot and killed after attack - Crime Scene - The Washington Post

Three dogs were shot and killed after attacking an 11-year-old boy who was riding his bike in Northwest Washington, authorities said.

A witness saw the dogs, all pit bulls, attacking the boy near the corner of 8th Street and Sheridan Street just after 1 p.m. Sunday, D.C. police spokesman Officer Araz Alali said. Alali said the witness went inside his home, retrieved a gun, and shot one of the dogs, killing him. When police arrived, an officer shot and killed the other two dogs.

Alali said the boy, who was taken to a local hospital with bites throughout his body, was in stable condition.
    Reader comment:

The witness gun was legal and he has done a great job about protecting his neighbor. I would like to extend a thank you for being a great neighbor. The dogs belong to a 45-50 year old adult male who stands by looking at scene amazed that his pitbulls were guned down. Washington post said that the pitbulls were shot but they were not the only one shot on the scene because the 11 year old suffer gun shot wound to the foot. Thanks for all the support and he is now stable as he
    awaits surgery.

Exactly what should have happened. Proper defense of life in the face of death.

The kid got shot, though. That's not good. Still, it's better than being mauled to death by three extremely strong dogs. Could easily have turned out differently.

Kudos to the resident and police, and to the news for reporting it with a fairly level head devoid of the unnecessary anti-gunner crap.

Ripped apart by dogs or shot in the foot . . . okay, just don't hit the big toe.

I'll take the Foot Shot for $400...

Of the OP...I hope the kid survives the possible mental issues caused by such an attack.

Good that the little boy survived the attack. Poor kid. If the neighbor hadn't shot the dogs the boy probably would have been ripped apart.

I thought guns were absolutely banned in Washington DC?

Many friends with pitbulls and never an issue. But one never knows. And they are extremely strong and capable dogs. An 11 year old had no chance against 1 nevermind 3 of them. Good job!

Pack mentality, you get one attacking and the other ones join in,good thing the neighbor intervened, just think if he would of been armed from the get go the attack wouldn't have lasted as long

...I'll wait for something more solid than a reader comment before I believe that the bite victim was shot...so far, I don't find it...and the press would LOVE to report it...we'll see...

Anyone want to start a poll as to whether it was a cop or neighbor that shot the kid?

The Cato Institute is reporting that the man is now under investigation for firearms violations:

Is the unidentified neighbor hailed as a hero? No – just the opposite – he apparently needs a lawyer because he is reportedly under “investigation” for violating our capital city’s firearms laws! You see – he may have discharged his weapon beyond his property line. Talk about no good deed going unpunished.

Of course. Dictrict of Crime Chief Lanier can't have her serfs protecting little kids from a pack of dogs and still justify her own job now can she...

The neighbor probably also possessed the weapon in open carry outside his property line. Isn't that a felony in DC? He'll probably get charged with that too.

Likely saved the life of the kid, in the face of a three-dog attack. Yet he's being investigated for weapons charges.

Hateful, over-controlling, bugger-the-citizens-every-chance-we-get type thinking is drowning this country. If the reported dog attack is as suggested, then this is just another case, seemingly, of zero tolerance gone overboard. Surprise, surprise.

It will be interesting to see how this is played out.

We've heard the administration ( I just can't capitalize that right now when referring to the current residents of 1600 Penn Ave ) go on and on about how their entire reason for gun control is to protect the children. How will they ever spin this one?
