That is the first response to anyone that mentions anti-gun talk. That puts them in the position of explaining why rights should be taken away.

Then you could suggest that other rights be infringed as well, after all how many news agencies do we need?

I wouldn't waste my breath or my time speaking with someone who believes in gun control. It would be aggravating and utterly pointless.

I've used that question in my discussions about gun control. Why should my rights be restricted due to the actions of a lunatic?
You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, "I have lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along." . . . You must do the thing you think you cannot do. Eleanor Roosevelt

When you're speaking to someone who believes that the collective good out weighs the rights of an individual, it's easy for them to say,"sure".

That's when I suggest they look up other societies that gave up individual liberties for perceived security and the betterment of the collective good and then let me know how that worked out for the individuals.

I mean, for the collective good, why not limit free speech? Words, as the vehicle for ideology, have lead to more death in this world than anything else.

The problem is that they already have their canned answer intact: "Why, of course we won't take away anyone's gun rights. That's just silly. We just want to require universal registration, a background check to buy a box of .22 Shorts, a limit on what type of guns(s) you can own, a limit to how much ammo you can carry, and a stack of federal forms to give a gun to your own child. Where do you people get such paranoid ideas?"

I can understand why some of you feel that way, but I'm still willing to give it a try. I collect all the arguments and facts that can give me the right "ammunition" to present a comprehensive and cogent response to any statement an anti tells me. It's certainly not easy, but I feel like it's a responsibility I have, and if I change even one person's opinion, it's worth it.

Let's pass 2 more Constitutional Amendments:

    1) Whatever limits, bans, permits, or fees are proposed for ONE civil liberty under the Bill of Rights has to be applied to ALL of the equally.

    2) Whatever laws the government subjects its people to they must also abide with NO exceptions.

That would put an absolute stop to this nonsense.

I know (right or wrong) .... I've asked a couple of old friends ... "you really aren't that stupid are you " .
You should see the funny looks and .... Uuuuuuuhhhh.... you get. Speaking at that point, they only admit their stupidity.
Typically.... what I get is , "well, what do you think ......... " ..... which then leaves me wide open .

When I was deployed in Afghanistan, I worked with a self-identified socialist. Oh the chats we would have.... Initially it was the classic lines about how "more guns, more gun crime", and all kinds of other socialistic ideas about the economy, etc. We discussed these things many times, and it would get heated sometimes. In the end, better ideas often win when you're talking to someone who genuinely wants to do the morally correct thing. Approaching gun control from the moral perspective, and from the simple fact of proportionality (criminals, and no one else, have them in strict gun control regimes, so proportionately speaking, you've empowered them), was quite helpful. By the end of our time there, I heard him repeat things I had explained to him about our healthcare system vs that of other countries (essentially they have flat out socialized systems, and we have a form of fascism...nowhere can you find a real free market healthcare system, so you can't blame "capitalism" for our problems and still be credible), he nodded in agreement when I said the solution to overfishing is to privatize the entire ocean....and when we got back, I took him and his wife shooting. They are now proud owners of a Ruger GP100. Better ideas win, you just need to have the patience and enough knowledge to ably defend them. Whether you decide it's worth the time it takes is another matter.
