The completion of this thought is ...but if we can save just one child's life, it will be worth it.
Basically, any and all gun bans are justified by the hypothetical that one less child has died. Boy, doesn't that stir up a philosophical debate about causes of death, the morality of the type of accident, acts which are harmful yet legal, and even destiny vs. design?
I don't think Uncle Joe was being philosophical, though.
