We need this law now! But we're going to give one year to comply.

    Hardly an immediate necessity.

If the plaintiffs prevail I think the NY State Legislature will merely go back and debate it for three days and pass it again.

Unfortunately, you may be correct. I am a bit disappointed that the fight is on the procedure used to pass the bill rather than the constitutionality of the bill itself. That being said, everything that can be done to make it harder and take longer for such a bill to go through is a good thing. If this bill can be defeated at this stage and would require reprocessing, it is possible that enough representatives could have been or could be influenced to vote against it a second time around.

This following sentence form the article is all telling:

The law, passed Jan. 15, grandfathers in assault weapons already owned by New Yorkers and requires owners to register the guns with the state. So it does not ban possession or ownership of the weapons outright, state officials have said.

to figure out where this will lead.
What they left out for the "shortsighted" individuals in society, who have not picked up on how government rolls on things of this nature is the following sentence : "Until we decide they pose an even greater unforseen threat, and then we'll ban them oughtright"

When will the people who have been and are asleep ath the wheel realize that THEY REALLY DO WANT TO CONFISCATE ALL THE GUNS!

Possibly, but the legislators have seen that there is a large push back & may not be so quick to vote for it again. They thought it would be easy & people would just "roll over" after Newtown. I don't think they expected the response that they have seen so far.
