Shotgun Could Be Banned Under CO Proposed Bill

Popular Standard Shotgun Could Be Banned Under Proposed Bill

DENVER (CBS4) – A popular hunting shotgun could be banned under one of the bills moving through the state Capitol.

A pump or semi-automatic shotgun is the gun most hunters in Colorado use. It’s a gun state Sen. Greg Brophy, R-Wray, says could be banned under a bill that’s already passed the House and Gov. John Hickenlooper says he’ll sign.

“They’re coming after the standard shotgun,” Brophy told CBS4 Political Specialist Shaun Boyd.

Brophy says if Democrats succeed in passing a bill limiting large capacity magazines in Colorado, they’ll outlaw the most popular selling firearm for hunting.

“Hundreds of thousands of pheasant hunters are probably going to be carrying around a gun they won’t be able to replace after July 1 this year,” he said.

Brophy points to a section of the bill that defines a high-capacity magazine as one capable of accepting or — that can be readily converted — to accept more than 15 rounds or eight shotgun shells.

“This is where shotgun shells go inside this tube here,” Brophy showed Boyd, “You can screw this part off the top and screw on an extender to this tube to allow it to hold more than eight rounds. It is readily convertible, which by definition in the bill, makes the whole thing a high-capacity magazine.”

Under the 1994 federal ban manufacturers redesigned the gun so the barrel couldn’t be extended. Brophy says it’s unlikely they’d do the same just for Colorado.

“I don’t know if anybody is going to make guns specifically for the five million people living in Colorado,” he said. “We just might not be able to legally purchase a pump shotgun or a semi-automatic shotgun.”

Or sell, transfer or even lend one.

“The law is specific as of July 1. You can keep it, but only if you maintain continuous possession of it,” Brophy said. “If it breaks, you can’t give to a gunsmith even to fix it. You can’t hand it to your son to use. It’s all now outlawed because of this 1224, the bill that Gov. Hickenlooper says he’s going to sign … this is most extreme thing anybody’s ever done related to firearms.”

Boyd asked Senate Democrats about Brophy’s concerns. They sent her a statement saying an amendment dealing with thats issue is currently being drafted and will be presented in a committee hearing Monday. What that amendment looks like and whether it passes remains to be seen.

Seven gun bills are up for hearings in the Senate on Monday.

Seems like the anti 2nd amendment politicians in Colorado do not want any big game hunters coming to their state to spend any money. If the hunting guides and ranch owners can't make a living that doesn't bother them at all. Time for the people to step up and vote these idiots out of office. Colorado seems to becoming the new california. People of Colorado take your state back.

I saw this when I woke up. It's scary to imagine that people are even considering banning shot guns. I'd say that next Biden would tell us to use a bow and arrow for protection, but I'm sure he'd try to take those away next too.

If folks have been asleep to the threats, now's the time to awaken: they're coming after everything. Make no mistake about it.

This lunacy only provides proof that in some states has so far been lacking.

I LOVED Colorado when I visited it twice, 10 years ago. I've considered maybe eventually residing in Colorado in the future. Forget that idea.

Hopefully, this wakes up the FUDDs out there. Gun bans that don't seem to affect you, may in fact affect you.

That's what I've been saying. This state has been infested by Liberals and none other than Nanny State Mayor Bloomberg has been sending his anti-gun lobbiests here to twist the arms of the Democrats in Denver. This state will forever lose it's frontier heritage. And guns are a huge part of that heritage. The law abiding citizens here are unfairly being punished by the actions of a single mad man,and Sheriffs everywhere throughout the state strongly oppose these laws, calling them nothing but "feel good " laws that will not do any good since anyone can just bring a 30 round magazine from outside of the state. The Democrats latest advise is to blow a whistle or piss your pants to thwart a rapist.I really hope the citizens of this state wake up and clean house in 2014 and get rid of these idiots. One law,the one that holds manufacturers of assault weapons liable is a clear violation of Federal Law The Protection Of Commerce In Arms Act,which was signed by Bush in 2005 to prevent civil lawsuits against gun manufacturers. But we are heading to the capital Monday morning. And I even was able to get some people from nearby Wyoming to come with us.I for one will also take my recreational activities this summer to Wyoming,Texas, and Utah.I hope they are happy with the lost revenue and job losses when Magpul pulls out and when hunters go elsewhere.Wyoming may experience a population boom from people fleeing this once great state.
    God help us all.
