GUN DEBATE: Senate To Discuss Gun Control | WHOTV.com ? Des Moines news & weather from WHO Television

Caught this on our local news tonight, thought I'd share it. Senator Chuck Grassley and Iowa Firearms Coalition's Jeff Burkett were interviewed, as well as a Connie Ryan Terrell from Interfaith Alliance of Iowa. Sadly, she couldn't even answer the reporter when asked to define what an "assault weapon" is.

So far it seems as Sen. Grassley is pushing back against increased background checks but he didn't discuss much else in this particular interview, or at least what they aired tonight. I'm betting they asked him other questions, maybe the rest of it will get aired at some point.

And if Jeff Burkett is a member on this site, keep fighting the good fight, sir.

'It doesn't matter that they can't define what an assault weapon is, any gun legislation will get more guns off the streets'

That's a paraphrase. But that's what they say... That, and that we have a national will to do this now more than ever.

"We want to make our streets safe, we want our children safe." But they don't have a clue, and they don't really care about the safety of children... and most of the women there have grandchildren... their children are grown, they have extra time on their hands... But they don't protest swimming pools, cars or any of the other things that kill more children.

Is it an "agenda" to disarm us..? not by these women... they simply don't know better... And the knowledge isn't what they want either.... there's some sort of emotional rush that they are "doing good"

I guess an assault weapon is kind of like art and pornography. Someone once said they couldn't define it but knew what it looked like.

If that's the case then all we need to do is figure out an argument for "the gun as art", and we can claim protection under the 1A. I'll start working on it if this post gets 5 or more likes.

Absolutely. And being from Iowa yourself you know as well as I do that it's this uneducated, emotionally driven nonsense that could easily have our state's lawmakers doing something really stupid in the very near future. I didn't even know there was going to be a rally at Grassley's office or I would have been there to provide some sort of opposition. Grassley has a lot of pull being the top Republican on the Senate Judiciary but he's on the fence over some of the gun bills being pushed by the Democrats. He also has a lot of stroke right here in Iowa so if he folds in Washington I fear that will lead to his constituents folding at the state level.
