My School District Makes National News!

I didn't even know my boss had done this interview until I came home at lunch today and was watching Fox News and there he is being interviewed by Megan Kelly on America Live! Needless to say, I am very proud to be an administrator in Levelland, Texas. It takes a minute to get to the superintendent's being interviewed, so stay tuned if you would like to see it.

I am a principal in Levelland and served on the Concealed Handgun Committee mentioned in the interview which ultimately made a recommendation to the school board that they approved about a week ago. I have mixed feelings about this making national news since this policy won't be in place until after the summer break. My LC9 is in my car every day, but I sure would feel better if it were at 4 o'clock on my hip inside by Crossbreed holster......

    Sounds like a good start.
Firing a suppressed is on my Bucket List.

I'm just a spoke in the wheel but not a big deal.

America...a Constitutional Republic. NOT a democracy as the liberals would have us believe.

Might be hard to believe, but I know only one liberal person in Levelland. She is one of my teachers, but actually has a favorable view to CC on campus. Guess I'm lucky to live in West Texas...........

I am basically never in or around schools so I previously hadn't given much thought to the campus carry concept, since the issue of on campus CC started getting more and more attention I've thought about it from a number of angles and came to the conclusion that I do support it. This goes for all types of institutions, primary, secondary, college etc. You hear a lot of arguments against like the 'drunken frat boy with a gun' and NDs in a classroom. I went to college with a number of gun owning and often intoxicated frat boys (trust me, I was one of them!), there were often guns around in their homes during parties and I never once saw any type of gun incident or anything unsafe. Accidents can happen anytime a gun is around, but the risk of someone innocent being hurt is so absolutely tiny I consider it an acceptable risk.

To the OP: What is going to be the district training requirement to carry? Also, I think I know this answer, but do you plan to carry?

MJB_17 -- The district will require "selected" personnel who will carry to:

    1. Have a current CHL.
    2. Be hand picked by the Superintendent.
    3. Keep the handgun "on their person" at all times when at work.
    4. Complete additional training.

What the additional training will be/look like is still to be determined. I believe the legislature is considering requiring DPS to develop a training program specifically for Texas schools. I read somewhere a few days ago that the training will be 16 hours, but that might have been someones speculation. We really don't know exactly what the training will be at this point.

I am friends with a local NRA/CHL instructor here in Levelland that told me that he would be willing to develop school specific training that would be similar to the NRA course "Personal Protection Outside of the Home" in which we could train on our own campus with air soft guns and examine tactical scenarios that might play out on our specific campuses. While that sounds like a very practical way to go (not to mention a lot of fun), we are in a "wait and see" mode. I am hopeful that the legislature will make a move quickly on this issue so we can have some guidance and direction in order to have training scheduled for this summer so that we can implement our new policy at the start of the next school year in August.

To answer your second question, you better believe it!

You ARE lucky to live in West Texas. While I love Utah, I would give nearly anything to have the job I have now at an institution located in select parts of West Texas (San Angelo or Abilene, yes. Midland/Odessa...oh hellz nah!)

Lets hope it not only works out but other states start implementing a program,I believe that since the situations you may be required to engage a BG it is imperative that any teachers be required to attend training on not only defense of a classroom but also being able to work as a team to pin down an Aggressor and keep him/them from any further rampage until LEO show up to take over

As a fellow Texan with a son still in the Texas school system-I applaud you. Thanks a million. Common sense rules the day in your district. Now if the administrators in San Antonio would just wake, up we might see some action down here as well. Not holding my breath.
