    Response from Senator Baucus

    LetterheadApril 30, 2013

    Dear XXXXXX:

Thank you for getting in touch with me about our Second Amendment rights. I appreciate you taking the time to contact me about this important issue.

Recent tragedies have shaken all of us, and everyone wants to do their part to protect our children and communities from violence of all kinds. Everyone agrees we need to do a better job keeping guns out of the hands of criminals, but infringing on the rights of law-abiding citizens isn't the solution.

Over the past few months I have been gathering feedback from Montanans across the state. I have heard from thousands. I opposed the background check gun control measure debated on the Senate floor. In the same series of votes, I also opposed amendments to ban assault weapons and regulate clip and magazine sizes. I believe we should be focused on enforcing the laws that are already on the books and work towards strengthening mental health programs.

I do not believe top-down, one-size-fits-all directives from Washington are the right approach to addressing gun violence. The Administration needs to do a better job enforcing laws that are already on the books to keep guns away from criminals instead of putting new regulations on law-abiding Montanans. We must take a targeted approach when addressing the issue of violent crime. Under the Obama Administration, federal weapons prosecutions have fallen to the lowest levels in over a decade. We should require the Department of Justice to explain to Congress why it has or has not been prosecuting gun cases under the laws that already exist.

I remain committed to addressing the issue of violent crime. During the Senate debate on gun control legislation, I supported an amendment that allows funds to be used for educating students, families, faculty, and staff on how to respond to students with mental health and substance abuse problems. Should this amendment be passed into law, it will also renew programs on suicide prevention and funding for child trauma centers. I will continue to find ways to reduce violent crime of all kinds while protecting the Second Amendment.

When making efforts to prevent crime, we must work hard to protect the constitutional rights of sportsmen and other law-abiding gun owners to carry and use firearms. I am a strong supporter of the Second Amendment, and I will always work hard to protect our right to bear arms.

My job is to make sure Montanans are heard in this debate. I will continue listening carefully to folks back home.

Thanks again for getting in touch. I also encourage you to visit my website at Max Baucus | U.S. Senator from Montana for current information on what I'm doing both here in Washington and at home to help Montana. Please contact me with any additional comments or concerns.
    Sincerely,

I wonder if Sen. Baucas would be interested in moving to FL and running for office. Sounds like a good man with his head on straight! Montana is lucky to have him.

Then why would he want to live in Florida?

Thanks! I'll be here all week... tip your waitress and bartender!

He announced his retirement and is not running in 2014.

I just received an email from Senator tester.....
He wants me to join him in Bozeman for his "upcoming Small Business Opportunity Workshop".

Great! Now I am getting SPAM from him. No response to the letter I emailed him on his Gun Bill vote. He is NOT going to get my vote!! When he comes up for re-election.

Don't forget Max is the one who helped write the health care bill and voted for the UN gun bill I believe so he is not all good, and he is retiring finally, what we really need to do is get that putz tester out of office.

That is correct since he is a Democrat and follows his party lines. Just recently he was quoted on calling "OBAMACARE" a "TRAINWRECK".
