Man shot by wife says shooting accidental
PACHECO, Calif., Nov. 22 (UPI) -- A Pacheco, Calif., man who was shot in the head by his wife says the gun -- not his wife -- is to blame because it did not have a safety device.

Norman Kamp said the incident resulted from his wife, Jan Kamp, handling the .357 Magnum while he sat 20 feet away watching football, the Contra Costa (Calif.) Times reported Wednesday.

Police said the bullet passed through Kamp's chair and inflicted a superficial head wound.

"The whole thing was an accident," Kamp said. "She was in another room looking at the gun when it went off. She couldn't believe that she shot me."

Kamp said his wife, who was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, was on pain medication for arthritis and had been drinking alcohol.

Prosecutors lowered the charges against Jan Kamp to assault with a deadly weapon, but her husband protested her continued incarceration.

"We are the tightest couple. Neither of us have a record of domestic violence. I just can't believe police are holding her for this," he said.

Neither apparently understands cause --> effect. If you pull the trigger, it'll fire. It also has a safety device: the trigger guard, the user's manual, and fairly-uncommon common sense. Perhaps he and she will now be open to the concept that they're incompetent with the handling of firearms. Perhaps not.

Attempted murder, eh, when their stories corroborate and the victim himself indicates there was no animosity/motive? Then again, at minimum it's criminal negligence with a device known to have such capabilities. If she's only been on the burner for a day or so being questioned, that doesn't seem unreasonable. Gross incompetence with a firearm should require a good talking to.

Well, it probably wasn't attempted murder.

But life is hard if you're stupid, and in this instance, she was.

    Love that line!

On pain meds, drinking alcohol and playing around with a loaded gun.
Yep, it was all the guns fault.

Put all of the facts into one sentance and see what it sounds like:

"She was in another room playing with a loaded gun with her finger on the trigger while drinking alcohol and taking pain medication. She couldn't believe that she shot me. It is the gun's fault because it doesn't have a safety."

He sounds like the kind of guy that'll sue a company that manufacturers electric knives because he severed his own finger off trying to cut a bagle in half.

Yeah, it could have been an "accident", or perhaps his wife was just fed up with his whining and bellyaching and finally decided to do something about it.

Must have been one of these guns Brady and the anti's are so hyped up over - malignant, malevolent pieces of machinery - with a will of their own

At my second read-through, I noticed he said "looking", as if to say she wasn't handling the firearm in any way. Even if he was implying she was fiddling around with the gun, the term "looking" deems what she was doing was superficial and nothing more than picking up the piece and observing it.

Lets call it what it really is. She was irresponibly handling a firearm and it discharged as a result, almost killing her own husband.

Well, Darwin tried but another one got away.

Yeah, it's always the guns fault , right, and it's the forks fault for obesity.

And the way it's printed, the alcohol and pain meds, not to mention handling (looking?) at the gun wasn't a factor.

In this case I hope they took the gun and they (LEO's) keep it, I usually advocate that anyone should be able to own a gun but if they're this stupid, maybe they shouldn't.

Everybody knows that guns can go off at any time, right? They are DANGEROUS and should be OUTLAWED for the safety of everyone. I'm surprised that more people haven't been killed!

Drugs and alcohol alter ones thinking. Most likely she was trying to end her husbands life.

Gut feeling there is more to this story than meets the eye.

The guy had better be a very light sleeper...that's all I'll say.

    911 Operator: 911, what's your emergency?

Wife: It's my husband. He was carving the turkey, slipped and fell on top of the knife.

911 Operator: Is he still concious? can you tell if he's still alive?

    Wife: No, he's dead.

911 Operator: How can you tell.

Wife: He fell on the knife 36 times.

    Thumbs up razorblade

Yep... Funny! You've got this story nailed down exactly right.

Don't worry...a little double dose of pain medication washed down with a few shots of Tequila and all will be forgiven and forgotten until "hubby" accidentally trips on the Dog Toy on his way down the stairs.
