My Comments: Look at the carts at the bottom of the article on the cities by 100,000 residence/population. As always, they ignore demographics of the people killing the most! But if you are informed, you will realize that........... well, you figure it out. It would be safe to say that each of these areas are 'Progressivly' led........, no?

.............The New Orleans metropolitan area, however, had the highest rate of gun murders, with 19 out of every 100,000 people in the area being gunned to death in 2009-2010.

    Overall number of gun murders:

    Gun murders per 100,000 people:

Gun murders of persons 10-19 years of age:

Gun murders per 100,000 persons 10-19 years of age:

I would like to see this compared to the poverty rate as well.

The same as gun violence blame the gun rather than the criminal behind the gun.

I doubt the murder rate in gated wealthy communities is very high - but in ghettos it's a way of life. Thank goodness for Obama, Mayor Bloomberg, Mayor Rahm Emanual, and others.

The interesting thing (to me at least) is there is a bit if a paradox. Keep the poor down, angry, and wanting handouts and you tend to get more Democratic votes. But, that also creates a scenario where people feel helpless, hopeless, and victimized (in this context the "Hope" message takes on a far different meaning). Crime increases, conditions worsen, so then those in charge need to shift the focus to other issues to keep people from understanding the real problem - something that would cost them votes.

Create an environment where there are jobs, where people have a chance to improve, and all of the sudden the American Dream (how many of you remember hearing that when you were young, but we almost never hear about the "American Dream" today) starts to take hold. Those same people realize that all those handouts were designed to keep them dependent, and realize that they don't need to live a life of despair. They start to care and things improve, and soon crime decreases.

A long time ago (30+ years) I listened to a series of tapes from Earl Nightingale called "Lead in the Field." There was a section talking about rundown poor neighborhoods, and how it really didn't cost much to make the appearance of a house or yard look better, it just took a sense of pride. Years later I looked into things like self-efficacy (basically empowerment) and social capital / efficacy. This helped explain (to me at least) why simple neighborhood revitalization efforts tend to fail. People are basically given fish instead of taught to fish.

Anyway, this is my perspective on the difference between wealthy and poor communities. It's much less about money, and much more about the way of life (as "theskunk" mentions). But, it is not good business for Democrats to help a big part of their base improve their situation. So, we see results like new new crime stats and few people on the right are surprised. Go figure...

Here are a couple of interesting links that I bookmarked in the past for anyone interested:

That would be interesting but I think Detroit may be pretty high if this played a big part.

I like Bait Car - TV show

Take a new Cadillac Escalade and park it in the ghetto with the keys in it. Now you get a 15 yr old kid to steal it, SWAT can corner him, Hollywood gets a TV show. It
s like leaving a Fifth of Jack Daniels infront of a street bum. Hey - Not a bad idea for a reality show

The author of the article has it wrong, the most up-to-date statistics can be found here:
    http://www.ucrdatatool.gov/Search/Cr...fDataLarge.cfm

They aren't meaningfully different, but it's worth just doing it right if you're going to look at the numbers at all.

Please don't try to link poverty and hopelessness to this trash, typical Liberal excuse making, kinda like Skittles. We all know LOTS of poor people and they arent out executing people.
    They are purely PREDATORS.

Over the course of my life, my income and "life" savings have fluctuated quite a bit. I've had good jobs, bad jobs, no jobs and I've even had a job that many people wouldn't do if they were paid 10 times what I earned. There were times when I didn't know when or where or how I'd get my next meal. I've lived in nice houses in nice neighborhoods, other people's homes and bad neighborhoods where the roaches were so dominant that they would turn the lights on to try to get the people to scatter. There were time when I worked 80 hour weeks and still didn't earn enough money to make ends meet. I've lived below the poverty line, at the poverty line and above the poverty line. No matter where I have been in relation to that poverty line, the number of murders that I have committed have never fluctuated. No matter where I have been in relation to that poverty line, a desire to commit murder has never manifested itself within me. No matter where I have been in relation to that poverty line, my murderous acts have remained at a constant zero.

"crackdown on armed criminals".....what a novel idea. These guys could get re-elected for coming up with such a ground breaking process to lower crime. Keep up the good work.
