Gabby Giffords co-writes gun control bait & switch op-ed

Giffords-Schneiderman pull gun control bait-and-switch; Tom Foley passes

Today’s Washington Post is running an op-ed bylined by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and New York Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman that pushes a new gun show background check scheme by referring to five high-profile mass shootings that had absolutely no connection to gun shows.

In one way this could be a good thing. Sandy Hook has lead to school officials going through training and arming them in the class room. They cry wolf and we find an even better response.

IMO the Giffords can best be defined as first class hypocrites.

I would expect the Gifford/Kellys to be biased, much like Sarah and Jim Brady.

Regardless of the tragedy she suffered she is still a liberal, with liberal ideas and a liberal agenda. Why would you expect anything else?

If a conservative pro gun type person experienced the same thing it would likely just strengthen their commitment to their position. Same thing for a liberal like Giffords.

Unfortunately critical thought has gone down the toilet. First, the much maligned and non-existent "Gun Show Loophole." Someone, anyone, please quote the federal statute that allows FFL dealers to sell guns without background checks at gun shows. There is no such thing as a "gun show loophole." Private citizens may buy and sell amongst themselves.

    And then this nonsensical snippet:

What’s more, this new model for responsible gun ownership was drawn up in cooperation with gun-show operators after undercover investigations revealed several years ago that vendors were illegally selling guns to anyone who wanted one. Show operators agreed to work with the New York Attorney General’s Office to close this dangerous loophole...

Yes, more laws to stop lawbreakers from breaking existing laws.

Just wondering, do you object to the attempt at linking gun shows to the attacks, or background checks in general, or gun show background checks? Just wondering.

    I object to argumentative fallacies.

If one wants to argue the efficacy of background checks for crime prevention and the balance of government intrusion into actions of private individuals selling private property, fine. But I do not appreciate fallacies when making arguments for legislative changes that will affect the rights of 300+ million Americans.

I guess it can be argued whether James Brady was a conservative before he was shot. His position became much clearer afterward.

Well, there's the solution! We just pass a law making it illegal to break the law!!! So simple, I'm surprised nobody has thought of it before!

I have seen next to nothing to indicate what James Brady's position is on gun control since the shooting. His wife is obviously an outspoken head-up-the-butt anti, but Brady himself appears to be pretty much a vegetable, able to parrot whatever he's told to say and that's about it. (Just based upon what I've seen.)
