The story of her permit is that she insisted on driving her own car and was known to wander off from her secret service escorts. She got the gun and permit for those times she didnt think she needed an escort. She was suposed to be quite good with a pistol or shotgun. DR

I think Eleanor Roosevelt was good at most things she ever did. She was a fantastic woman.

AND -- she refused to wear earrings! (That alone puts her at the top of my hero list.......)

The permit was issued in 1957 long after any SS protection would have ended AFAIK,I think people missed the point, she was issued a NYS Pistol Permit and it "WASN'T VALID IN NY CITY"

I got the NY State part, My Grandmother very carefully followed what she did. She had lifetime protection of the Secret Service. She just wasn't very good about following their direction. I imagine the City of NY would have granted her a permit or looked the other way. She was not the type to take no for an answer. And back then I don't believe anyone from the city would have said no to her. DR

The only thing I can think of is," what did she choose to carry"?

Pretty sure she used to carry a K-frame. There are some pics on the web of her shooting it.

Actually until the laws were changed in 1997 ex-presidents and spouses had lifetime protection, except in the case where the president was deceased and the spouse remarried. Since 1997 the security detail is limited to 10 years.

I doubt even Bloomy would have had the cahonies to have her arrested. Would have probably gotten anyone who tried a long drop at the end of a short rope.

Unless the SS hasn't updated their website, the 10 years still applies.

In a city of 8M+ people, imagine if the citizens determined that state preemption would wipe all municipal ordinances right off the map, and that NYC no longer had carte blanche on infringements. I wonder how much safer the place would be with several hundred thousand or more citizens going around fully armed and capable of withstanding attempts at violence against them.

Things that make you go "hmmmmm."

One thing's for certain: if Eleanor couldn't get past the hurdles, the likelihood of the average person doing so is zip. Beyond the violent felons we're all "gunning" for, of course, who ignore all these prohibitions anyway.
