NC: CCW permits are not public record.

    That is a good thing.

But, the press wants to know, of course.

They don't want to know if a lunatic has a permit to carry a crowbar (is it because he didn't kill the person he attacked with that crowbar?). But they do want to know if he had a permit to carry a gun... the gun he killed two others and himself with. They don't want to tell us whether he had a license to drive the car he stole from one of the victims... But by gosh, if he had a permit to carry a gun; well, see, it just proves that all people who have gun permits are potential lunatics.

The shooter was the subject of a restraining order, according to the article (below) so, he should not have been able to purchase a handgun under NICS... In most states you can't have a permit to carry if you won't pass the NICS check. And, if the existing law is being enforced, and you have one, the permit should be rescinded.

But no, the press wants to know if the shooter had a permit... they don't want to know if the law was enforced... they want to know if the lunatic was a permit holder. Subtle distinction? No, not really.

Here are the details of the crimes committed: Story 1

Here's how the press lets the public know that it should be able to tell them whether a lunatic has a permit... OP ED

The op ed fails to recognize that NC is a shall issue state which cannot discriminate on the basis of party affiliation or anything else frivolous... or that the state is an open carry state... without a permit... (as I read Handgunlaw.us). But the OP ED writer wants to know if the subject had a permit...

This is what we're up against. In every state... even some with pretty liberal handgun laws...

First, NC does NOT require a permit to OWN a gun. They do require a permit from the sheriff if you receive a handgun while you are a resident of NC but there is no required paperwork if you own it prior to moving to NC.

Second, there is NO permit required to open carry in NC so if he didn't conceal he wouldn't NEED a permit to conceal carry.

The OP ED is a hoot since by statute in NC the issuing of a CHP is clearly regulated and the only reasons for denial of a permit are plainly stated in these statutes AND the sheriff MUST by statute give the reason for denial.

Just another misguided opinion of one of the "I'm Entitled" generation.

EDIT TO AD: My post isn't a rant directed at oakchas, it's aimed at the low wattage bulb that wrote the "news" article and op-ed piece.

The editor need look no further than his fellow 'journalists' for the reason that the information has been closed to the public. If it wasn't for the nut jobs in NY that published gun ownership by individual by county, this type of law would not need to exist.

There simply is no reason to publish a list specifically designed to isolate some law abiding citizens who own firearms any more than there is a reason to publish a list of people who legally take certain prescription medications, or those who own certain types of cars, etc.
