Columbus police shot and killed a robbery suspect overnight.
Four officers opened fire on the suspect at the intersection of N. High Street and Lane Avenue shortly before 2 a.m.. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, Sgt. Kevin Corcoran told WBNS-10TV.
The man was suspected of trying to rob a CVS pharmacy at 7470 Sawmill Rd. about 1:30 a.m. Police said he handed a note to an employee demanding all the pharmacy's OxyContin but fled the drugstore without being given any of the prescription painkiller.
No one at the store was hurt, said Corcoran, who didn't know how many employees or customers were there.
Employees provided police with a description of the suspect and the getaway vehicle. Officers on patrol in the University District recognized the vehicle stopped at a traffic light on Lane Avenue at N. High Street. When police approached the vehicle, a confrontation ensued during which four officers shot at the suspect, and the suspect was killed.
Police said the suspect had an assault rifle in the vehicle. It was not known whether the victim had fired the weapon at police before he was shot.
This happened in Columbus last night. THat intersection is 2 blocks from my apartment up here. I do remember waking up at about the time it happened worried about something last night, but with all the city noises that isn't completely unusual. I wonder what the evil "assault rifle" this guy had was. Gotta go walk through the intersection right now to get to class actually.
Just around the corner, the other day, a 14yr old was stopped for a traffic violation and came out packing an SKS rifle. There's no age restriction on "stupid." A couple weeks back, an armed robbery occurred on a corner store a couple of blocks from where I work. A few days before that one ...
Yeah that's about as stupid as the kids that were riding around on bikes last year with the unloaded .22 rifle that they ducttaped a 30rnd ak mag to to make it look scarier when they tried to carjack somebody. They ended up losing that fight if memory serves...
There is an update, which says that the suspect had gotten out of the car with an AR-15, as opposed to the earlier one which said an assault rifle was found in the car. I wonder how this happened though, since all assault weapons are banned in C-bus, the ban is like a magical wall that won't let mine enter the city, so I wonder how this guy got an AR in. The intersection is at one of the corners of campus, and the remnants of the police tape are still up. I appear to of been the only student to of known about it (one of my professors who commutes from Dayton asked about it, and I was the only one who could respond.
I also changed the thread title in response to P95's earlier comment, I wouldnt want to give the impression one of our fine boys in blue(or white up here) was shot.
Does it matter if he hand an "assault rifle" or a bolt action, a shotgun or pistol? Nope. Outcome should be the same. We had a similiar incident last weekend, but it was more involved. I'll find the news story and post it in a new thread.
got what he deserved...makes no difference if it was an AR, Shottie, or a Snubbie...a gun is a gun, stupid is stupid...and now dead is dead...:congrats:
I agree that he should have been shot, and in my mind it doesn't really matter what he had in his hand. The thing about it is, the media jumps on these types of stories around here, especially with the passing of pre-emption, and the sheep listen to them. I don't quite see how he was a victim either.
