Man tries to dismantle gun while driving, shoots self
    January 4, 2007

CONCORD, N.H. --A man trying to dismantle his gun while driving on a busy road accidentally shot himself in the thigh and caused an accident, police said.

Breaking News Alerts Investigators say 22-year-old Robert Drown of Webster was driving on Loudon Road when he shot himself Wednesday while trying to place his gun in a safety mode. He said he didn't know the gun was loaded.

He collided with a minivan and a convenience store sign and came out of his SUV covered in blood.

Police said Drown was lucky that he injured himself near a fire station and with an off-duty paramedic nearby who came to his aid.

Drown was rushed into surgery to repair the gunshot wound. He was hospitalized in fair condition on Wednesday night.

Investigators said the incident was a case of poor judgment.

Clearly one of those folks that should have been wearing one of those Bill Engvall "I'm Stupid" signs so everyone would know to steer clear. Some people are wise enough to learn from others mistakes, some smart enough to learn from their own, and others too stupid to learn from either. Maybe the rest of us will get lucky and he'll end up one of the smart ones?

He said he didn't know the gun was loaded.
*sigh* ....... poor judgement is a very polite way of saying - something else

The word stupid tends to slip in here somehow!

If he didn't know it was loaded, why was there any desire to "safe" the weapon? That is probably the second stupidest thing I have ever heard of/seen people doing while driving, right after drinking, but it is ahead of putting on mascara.

Invariably. Common sense ain't what it used to be.

Have You ever noticed that when stupid people shoot themselves they either claim it was the guns fault, or they didn't know it was loaded? They never take responsibilty for their actions. Sort of like those "its not my Job" people.

There really are people around who shouldn't have a firearm.

"I didn't know the gun was loaded." is just another way of saying "I don't know what I am doing when it comes to guns."

All guns are loaded, all the time. Period.

And in case you are wondering, my XD in my avatar is unloaded and the picture was taken with the camera set on a timer. No one behind it.
