Bloomberg leads group urging gun control

Mayor Michael Bloomberg, along with mayors from some of the nation's largest cities joined forces in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday to pressure Congress into cracking down on illegal firearms.

Really? What aprt of illegal doesn't he understand?

The mayoral coalition -- Mayors Against Illegal Guns - also announced the creation of a bipartisan task force, comprising four House members, which will aim to introduce legislation attacking illegal gun ownership.

    Hello? Illegal!

The task force will focus on eliminating the Tiahrt Amendment, which blocks cities from gaining access to or using gun-trace data collected by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Mr. Bloomberg, who has been called "the Manhattan gun grabber," by several pro-gun groups, sued more than two dozen out-of-state gun dealers in 2005 for allegedly selling weapons that were traced to crimes committed in New York.

Mr. Bloomberg urged Congress to distinguish between illegal gun ownership and the Second Amendment. "Respecting the rights of gun owners while cracking down on illegal guns are completely compatible goals and we are committed to both," he said.

What? Don't the laws already do this? Is Mr. Bloomberg trying to say some guns are OK, or is he trying to blur the distinction?

Made up of over 120 mayors from 46 states and the District of Columbia, the coalition was formed last April following a meeting of 15 mayors in Gracie Mansion. It is led by Mr. Bloomberg and Mayor Thomas Menino of Boston.

The meeting was attended by about 40 mayors and other supporters, including the president of the American Hunters and Shooters Association, who emphasized the desire of legal gun owners to ally themselves with the mayors' efforts. The meeting also cited a poll by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research and the Terrance Group, which found that 56% of its 803 respondents favored stricter gun laws.

803 respondents? Hardly scientific. And which "group" was polled???

Being a native of NYC myself, I am not shocked in the slightest over Hizzoner's stance. It seems to me that to govern in the City of NY, one MUST be anti-gun irrespective of their party affliation....witness former mayors Guiliani, Dinkins, Koch, so on and so forth....

We have one or two threads on this Bloomberg deal in recent times - which a search should bring up.

He has to be one of the most anti-constitution mayors I can think of.

    I've already gone to: http://www.congress.org
Entered my Zip & Emailed my Reps (State AND Federal) and asked them to NOT add any more gun control laws - that there were plenty already on the books and to do nothing to cause more problems with our 2nd Amend rights.
