ORLANDO, Fla. -- More Central Floridians are packing heat, according to a Local 6 News report.

Officials told Local 6 News that the increase in concealed-weapons permits is connected to the increase in violent crime over the past 18 months.

Concealed-weapons permits have doubled in Orange County since 2005, according to officials.

One expert who works at a Central Florida gun range said that she's personally seen a 20 to 30 percent increase in people obtaining permits to carry a firearm, a third of which are women.

"I think more people are more concerned about their safety because it used to be limited to the 'bad sections of town.' There is no more bad sections of town. I have personal friends that have been strong-armed robbed in their driveways," gun expert Eileen Rieg said.

And the increase is wider than the Greater Orlando area.

"It's not just in Orange County," Local 6 News reporter Louis Bolden said. "We have also seen the trend increase in Seminole and Osceola counties."

Purchasing a gun in Flordia takes about three business days but getting a concealed-weapons permit usually takes up to three months.
