I am a US LEO working in Brazil. Here are two reports from local news outlets that ran today:

O Globo 12-17 / Jornal do Brasil A10-A13: A war among two rival drug trafficking factions and the police erupted yesterday morning in downtown Rio, near the Mineira slum. The gun fight lasted for ten hours and left 13 criminals dead and three people wounded, including a bus passenger. Eleven drug dealers were arrested. There was panic on the streets as traffic was blocked, causing problems in the Southern part of the city.
Then there was this:
O Globo 19: A lawyer and former civil policeman reacted when two criminals on a motorcycle shot a 61-year old man during a robbery in downtown Rio, on the street that runs by the U.S. Consulate. The victim and one of the two robbers were killed.
Of course, gun violence in Brazil, and specifically in Rio, is nothing new. The joke is that these articles were followed, in the same publication (the leading newspaper chain in Brazil), with this:

O Globo 06: Op-ed notes the massacre at Virginia Tech was the worst school shooting in U.S. history, but it was not the first. According to O Globo, the U.S. should reconsider the ready and easy access to guns available to all citizens and residents.
(Emphasis added.)

For those that don't know, legally acquiring a firearm in Brazil is much more difficult than it is in the US - so obviously there is no problem with gun violence here!

What's that Einstein quote about the limits of human stupidity? :scratchchin:

Yeah, dr_cmg, I was indirectly referencing you (and those quotes in general). More evidence that Einstein was even smarter than we give him credit for... :)

This comes a few days after police in the northern state of Pernambuco arrested 20-some people for running a murder-for-hire ring. This group - including police officers, business men, drug dealers, and others - is suspected in at least 1,000 murders over the last 5 years. But we need to clean up out act, huh?
