New Anti-Gun Campaign Begins
WNYC Newsroom
NEW YORK, NY July 18, 2007 —The city has the toughest laws on illegal gun possession in the US, but Mayor Bloomberg worries criminals don't know it. So the city and the Citizens Crime Commission have created a public service campaign to make the new penalties "crystal clear."
REPORTER: CCC President Richard Aborn says the campaign will highlight a recently signed law that makes possession of an illegal gun punishable by a minimum of 3 ˝ years in prison.
ABORN: This is a simple message. Guns equal prison. That's the name of the campaign. It's a campaign that gonna be exposed throughout this city for a long time. At least throughout this year.
REPORTER: The campaign will feature posters on phone booths, buses and subways, in addition to restaurants, bars and night clubs.

The problem in a nutshell. The criminals DO know it. They just don't care, they are criminals after all. Now those willing to follow the laws? They are the ones punished.

Meaningless. When the BGs get caught there is almost always a sweet plea bargain, and nobody does any real time. Usually, the gun charge is never even prosecuted UNLESS the person is a normal, tax-paying, employed citizen.
If the scumoids who recently shot the two LEOs had ever been prosecuted for all of their crimes and received an additional 3 1/2 years for each gun charge, they would still be in jail and out of circulation for several more decades.
You can listen to Bloomberg or stand closely behind a cow with diarrhea, the effect is the same!

Bloomberg: Guns equal prison.
Teknoid: Bloomberg equal moron.
I escaped from Illinois. I've been to NYC and LA. No offense to people on this forum who live in those places (just sympathy for your lousy politicians), but I would only go there if forced.
One daughter still trapped in the peoples republic of Illinois, but we're working on it.

For some people, guns should equal prison.
But everyone?

The only time I have been in California and New York was when I was forced to travel through there with the Military. I went to Chicago just to spirit my Sister to safety years ago. During my brief stay in each I never lost anything, therefor there has never been a reason to go back.

No criminal thinks they are going to get caught.
They are used to getting away with doing illegal things. It's their lifestyle.
They never get caught until they finally do get caught.
Usually they all have MANY crimes already under their belt until the first time they get nabbed.
All of those various assorted crimes are the ones they got away with.
Also when they need money for addictive drugs they are going to do crime no matter if there a good chance they will get caught.
That's because they are drug addicts and in their minds they have no other choice.

I just got back from a visit to New York City. While riding the subway my wife pointed out a poster in the subway car - "Possess an illegal gun and do 3 1/2 years".
I didn't make us feel any safer.

Bingo! ^^
Why is this very simple fact so difficult for so many people and politicians to comprehend?!
It's not like as much is the new math or something.
These signs will work wonders for crime in NYC, just as the similar law notification signs have worked miracles for D.C. since '76...

"The 1976 Washington, DC homicide rate before the law was 26.9 (derived from population and homicide statistics) and then tripled to 80.6 by 1991 despite or due to the [D.C. gun ban] law."

Of course not. If four 17-year-olds came up to you menacingly with screwdrivers, how safe would the fact that they didn't have guns make you?
(To say nothing of the fact that if they're willing to rob/murder you, they're probably not concerned with whatever the enhanced penalty for having a gun is, so they might still avail themselves of the illegal ones.)

Well, anyone with an illegal gun, yes. The thing is, having an illegal gun already is a crime, though it wouldn't surprise me that, even in NYC, it doesn't currently mean you will go to jail.
See true crime for what it is. Wipe the streets with the criminals. Keep the streets clean, including long jail terms, fines, restitution, possible ejection from citizenship and the country. The rest of citizens, however, should not hardly be criminalized on mere suspicion (as A.G. Gonzales & Bushie would have done). Nor should citizens be criminalized for standing up to criminals themsleves, specifically because the elected politicos don't have the ability or willingness to take on this job themselves. Take that tack, then NYC and other places could actually become liveable again.

The problem in Illinois is Chicago controls the whole state.
NY you have people in the City that control the city, but the rest of the state can think for themselves.
California, well I will leave that one alone.
Illinois, the majority of our state officials and Gov come from Chicago, so they can set state laws at will and no one downstate can do anything about it. We write letters and make phone calls, but Chicago has the majority. It sucks...........
