Ron Paul's position is simply to defend the Constitution, which includes the Second Amendment. Thankfully he's given special mention to it and supports it specifically at times, which is what allows me to trust him with the issue of "gun rights".
To quote from an essay I wrote on the subject of federal gun control (just a month ago, actually):
"Federal gun control, strictly speaking, is not illegal. Congressional legislators have the authority to enact whatever regulatory laws they wish so long as they do not deprive individuals the right to keep and bear arms for the purpose of maintaining an effective militia and so long as they are acting within the limits of their constitutional powers; State gun control cannot interfere with the Congress’s ability to call forth an effective militia, or with its citizens’ right to keep and bear arms. The Supreme Court has the authority to determine what arms are suitable for militia purposes, as it has done twice in the past. The only role of the executive branch is to oversee implementation of Congress-made laws so far as its own restricted powers permit."
At the state level, historically, the only two "gun" issues states have ever dealt with are issues of Concealed Carry v. Open Carry and what arms are suitable for militia/military use. So at this level, the same legislative rules still apply, but with a little bit more specifics involved; they can regulate arms and the method in which arms are carried as much as they wish, so long as they never prevent the keeping and bearing of militia-appropriate (eg. "military style") arms.
You will most-likely not need a permit, but some sort of registration or database is not unconstitutional (or hasn't yet been deemed so) and may technically still be administered. Not to say it will, but it still may. Just making a point.
Huckabee is certainly pro 2A...he's gaining my attention...
He is certainly a strong conservative...
For me the 2A support is of primary importance...
