Angry Sarkozy ain't no friend of gun ownership, even if he ain't a leftist.

It is taboo in Europe to say that if the state fails to protect the citizens, the citizens should do so themselves. There is no Second Amendment in Europe. Even European politicians from the so-called "right," like Mr. Sarkozy, are horrified at the suggestion that citizens should be allowed to protect themselves against criminals. Last year, Mr. Sarkozy told French radio: "Security is the responsibility of the state. I am against the private ownership of firearms. If you are assaulted by an armed burglar, he will use his weapon more effectively than you anyway, so you are risking your life."

The result is that in France only the criminals are armed, while decent citizens, even those as brave as Anne-Lorraine, perish.

This is excerpted from an article here about crime and criminals in France. The link actually was provided by the NRA's website.

When Sarkozy beat some leftist loony wench, I was pleased. I was just happy that the socialists in France had lost a bit of their footing. Now I see this, though, and I dislike the guy strongly.

He also could have said: Just surrender-it's in your French blood anyways...

Sarkozy may be known as 'right-wing' here, but he would caucus with the Democrats if he were in the U.S.

I believe the French also think the UN and NATO should protect them, they need not be equipped to do it themselves. They have not done a very good job of fending for themselves. ( ie WW I & WWII )

Hinge the end of your life on a falsehood. That'll do it.

From a citizen, it would sound defeatist. From someone holding a temporary seat of power, it sounds decidedly statist and reeking of Big Brother. Unsurprising, really.

Now if each and every citizen had his security then they wouldn't need a gun would they. Now if he had no one to protect him and he had to walk into the burbs of Paris unarmed he wouldn't feel so safe.
