Every definition I can find for the word "sport" includes the word "physical" in the definition. Sitting on your butt for 6 hours in a car is not physically exerting. It's an entertaining event, but I fail to see how it's a sport.

In typical summer races drivers lose 4 to 8 pounds during a race. It is a very physically demanding job. I am by no means a driver but I have been behind the wheel a time or two. Going down the straight away is like holding to bricks in your hands at chest level. Unless you are in great shape, one lap will leave you sore and exhausted. And we aren't even talking about trying to take the turns which is a whole different animal.

One other thing I don't understand about Nascar...

Why is it that the people with the Nascar stickers on their car drive the slowest?

I went to college in Daytona Beach. I remember living off campus my second year but riding my bike back and forth to campus, right through the heart of the race crowd there for speed week. At no other time was your life more at risk when that crowd was in town. They didn't drive too fast, it was that they didn't pay attention to anything!
