"Old Marines never die, we just smell like it." USMC 71'-83'
SCCC - It's not an "official membership" group and relies on participation and volunteering, but it's as grassroots as it comes and is growing fantastically. Empty Holster Week's already looking to be over twice as big this year as it was last year.

I am a leader with Ohio's most effective grassroots organization, Buckeye Firearms Assoc. Buckeye Firearms Association | Defending Your Firearm Rights
I'm a Life Member of the NRA, and an NRA instructor.
It sounds like you're wanting to dig right in and not just sit on your laurels on the sideline. Find out what is the MOST effective grassroots organization in your state. And then make contact with someone in leadership. Trust me, it's music to our ears when someone actually wants to get involved and do something.

The NRA, for over 50 years.
Lets see, I gave a contribution to some two bit outfit named "Defensive Carry dot com"... and I'm a member there.
Other than that, I spend my money doing things like my FOIA requests, petitions, letter writing.
I think individual "lobbying" goes further than a membership in a lobbying organization -- Usually. I'm actually not an NRA member, but am considering joining Rocky Mountain Gun Owners.
I have this fear that organizations don't always represent me the way I want. One really, really good example are the various Police organizations who lobby against CCW, even though surveys indicate that their membership is overwhelmingly in favor of them -- although I should mention that I'm not a LEO, it's just an example.
Places like DefensiveCarry, in my opinion, weild more power than most people realize.
The facts are indisputable. There is more data supporting the benefits of Conceal Carry than there is supporting global warming. If you choose ignorance, in light of all the evidence, in order to bolster your irrational fear of guns, you are a greater threat to society than any gun owner.
Ohioans for Concealed Carry (OFCC)
formerly NRA (they sold my personal info without permission - never apologized )
wanted to become Life Member NRA
now looking at LEAA
