Here in SW Idaho, our paper just reported over 25,000 CCW permits now held in just 3 counties. This is a pretty rural area with Boise as the only real population center. Heck the whole state only recently passed the million mark in population. I would say SW Idaho in this 3 county area has about 500,000 population...I did the rough math...out of that I guess 30% are minors, and maybe 50% are people that would never consider handling a gun, so out of the rest of us, the percentage ofCCW holders is pretty high.
Idaho made the process easier several years ago, and people are responding (you still have to pass the background check and check out clean)
The funny thing is, is we have fairly low crime and low population and many people don't think its necessary to get a permit. I was one of those people, but figured I'd better get legal because I like to keep a piece in my truck and be legal if I get in a normal traffic stop.
It's just a feeling of security to know you have protection at hand.
