Miami Gardens council seeks strengthened gun laws

    Here we go again

    BY PETER BAILEY
    pbailey@herald.com

Hoping to quell what local leaders call an epidemic in gun violence, the Miami Gardens City Council on Wednesday unanimously agreed on two measures they say will regulate gun control.

The resolutions ask for Congress to reinstate a ban on assault rifles that expired in 2004 and for state and federal legislators to impose stricter controls on handgun purchases.

''This is the first step towards creating a culture that's not accepting of guns,'' said Councilman André Williams, who sponsored the resolutions. ``Miami Gardens can take the forefront in that culture shift.''

So far, Miami is the only other city in the county pushing for tightening gun control, Williams said.

Both resolutions were met with applause from the more than 100 residents, civic and clergy leaders who packed the council meeting.

''As a small business owner, my major concern is violence,'' said Vladimir Sautier. ``Locking up at night is always scary.''

Although crime is down in the city, those committed with guns -- particularly assault rifles -- has still posed a considerable problem.

Last year, guns were used in 24 murders, 460 robberies and 428 assaults, according to Police Chief Matthew Boyd. Police have confiscated more than 80 illegal guns since the department took over patrol duties from the county last December.

Earlier this month, the city began a gun-bounty program that offers $1,000 for any tip that leads to an illegal seizure of a firearm and arrest.

For some, the violence has taken a personal toll.

''We've had parishioners in our churches who've lost loved ones to senseless shootings,'' said the Rev. Andreas Thode of St. Timothy Lutheran Church. ``The faith community is happy the City Council has taken this courageous step.''

Thode and 14 other neighborhood ministers have formed a partnership to call for peace within the city. The coalition held a march on March 16. The group has planned more rallies.

The plan to stem the violence will rely on such grass-roots efforts, said Councilman Oliver Gilbert III.

''Officers need your help. It's not enough to say we want crime to go down,'' Gilbert said. ``We're a good city. It's time for us to be a better community.''

Williams said he plans to meet with U.S. Senator Bill Nelson's regional director later this week in hopes of garnering support.

''This is just the beginning,'' Williams said. ``This legislation can save lives.''

    The council also:

    • Approved a measure to create the Miami Gardens Progressive Young Adults which would engage adolescents in the political process and other civic arenas.

    • Accepted an engineering report and feasibility study to repair damaged streets through drainage and other infrastructure.

Yep, that will do it....... ban those BAD BLACK GUNS, and make it harder for a law abiding person to purchase a gun. Definitely the way to stop criminals!

I suppose we should be happy that they're forced to pay people to conduct illegal seizures and addrests. It's the Orson Welles in me that just doesn't find such slips of the tongue so funny, any longer.

One would hope they would focus on ONLY those steps that (a) reduce the incidence of guns in the hands of criminals (b) but not at the unconstitutional expense of any innocent's ability to defend himself. That would really be something.

''Officers need your help. It's not enough to say we want crime to go down,'' Gilbert said. ``We're a good city. It's time for us to be a better community.''
They've got a thug problem, not a gun problem. Only if the number/violence of thugs is reduced will there be improvement, 'cause it isn't upstanding citizens doing the damage here.

Increase patrols, increase arrests, offer dial-a-tip rewards to those reporting drug/thug activity, deport illegals, enforce stiff sentences on repeat offenders and those engaging in violent crime. Taking guns out of the hands of upstanding citizens won't do a thing to reduce thuggery in that area. That formula ain't rocket science.

OK, first lets not make blanket indictments about the whole county. About 80 % of the crime is located in the Miami Gardens area (jamaican & hatian dopers shooting it out for control of the trade) and Southwest Dade (Mara & other gangs) The rest of the county even CubanTown (Hialeah) is pretty quiet compared to those areas.
Miami Gardens has lost control of it neighborhood 'cause it ain't their fault but somebody elses according to their own stupid ways.

Sure, go ahead and make it more difficult for older people to defend themselves in their homes against the BG's that roam the city looking for easy prey. Maybe a baseball bat will do....

And there we have it. Not only will they go for "assault weapons", but also "hunting weapons" and eventually all firearms. The true reason behind it all is staring everyone right in the face.

I've done some business down there. Miami Gardens is a dirty, nasty, crime-ridden, thug-infested little sewer (did I leave anything out Miggy?) and is not "Miami"! The 2 should not be confused.

I'm sure the city council of Miami Gardens would like people to think that they represent a much larger community than they actually do though.
